David Read:
Welcome, everyone, to Dial the Gate: The Stargate Oral History Project. My name is David Read. I am pleased to present a fellow YouTuber, Marton Szokor. It’s Szokor, right? I’m pronouncing it right?

Marton Szokor:
S with an S. Sokor.

David Read:
Sokor?

Marton Szokor:
Yeah.

David Read:
Sokor. So it wasn’t too hard. OK, so the Z is silent.

Marton Szokor:
Yep.

David Read:
Marton, how you doing, man?

Marton Szokor:
Thank you, sir. Thanks for inviting me. It’s a pleasure to be here.

David Read:
How long have you been a Stargate fan?

Marton Szokor:
Good question. I was introduced to Stargate around 2006, so I’m relatively a latecomer to the party.

David Read:
Latecomer. He’s only been watching for 20 years, so late.

Marton Szokor:
But again, I remember my godfather gifted me a bunch of DVD disc sets. I was first introduced to Atlantis, and then I had to watch SG-1 retrospectively. Watching the show became a family, post-dinner routine.

David Read:
Everyone watched it?

Marton Szokor:
Yeah, pretty much.

David Read:
OK, wow. How old were you?

Marton Szokor:
I was less than 14.

David Read:
You were 14 when you saw Atlantis for the first time?

Marton Szokor:
I was around 14. Yes.

David Read:
OK, so you’re 1990 then. So, you were seven when SG-1 started.

Marton Szokor:
Yes.

David Read:
So no wonder you came into it a little bit late. Except for Nicole, who saw it when she was four years old. Is Stargate your first sci-fi love?

Marton Szokor:
Probably, yes. As a Y-gen kid, I loved The Phantom Menace and Star Wars also. But that’s more of a mythological love than a sci-fi love.

David Read:
“Pee yousa.”

Marton Szokor:
The Sith Lord. Stargate has a special place in my heart, and I’m very glad to be part of this community. It’s cool to engage. It’s cool to be part of a fandom that just keeps on going, keeps existing.

David Read:
Why do you think that is? What’s Stargate’s alchemy? Why does it work as well as it does for as long as it has?

Marton Szokor:
Probably because it has timeless stories, similar to Trek, of course. It’s the writing, probably due to the fact that there’s so much of it. 17 seasons of television won’t disappear. But to be honest, frankly, I tried to let it go once, ’cause they were about to reboot the franchise around 2014. And it was disappointing.

David Read:
You’re talking about Origins?

Marton Szokor:
No, I talk about the …

David Read:
Earlier.

Marton Szokor:
… Dean Devlin, Roland Emmerich …

David Read:
I see.

Marton Szokor:
… reboot thing.

David Read:
OK.

Marton Szokor:
Nothing against the guys.

David Read:
“I just don’t want your product.”

Marton Szokor:
I spent more time in the TV universe with those characters.

David Read:
We’re talking about 2 hours versus 354.

Marton Szokor:
Exactly.

David Read:
I’ve found that people’s love for Stargate is proportional, typically, not exclusively, to the hours that they have experienced with it. So, it often makes sense. And also which one they saw first, in many cases, though not exclusively. There’s a lot of history to this show, and Amazon is recognizing that in the new one with who they have to do it. What did you think about finding out about Stargate 4, and what do you think we’re in for?

Marton Szokor:
November the 19th, 2025.

David Read:
November 19th.

Marton Szokor:
It was that day I’ll never forget ’cause I was home–

David Read:
“A day that will live in infamy.”

Marton Szokor:
That’s for sure, mate. The story behind it is I was home, and in the morning, my wife was just giving birth to a child, my second daughter. So it was …

David Read:
November 19th?

Marton Szokor:
… on that day. Yes. I was home.

David Read:
I think I remember this.

Marton Szokor:
We were past the whole thing. She gave birth at home. Of course, she passed out next to me, fell asleep. I had the baby on my chest. She was listening to my heartbeat and, “OK, it’s time for rest. I’ll enable WiFi, check on parents, tell them everything’s all right.” The thing is, I enabled WiFi and the first notification I got was from GateWorld that Stargate is back. The second was from you, Dial the Gate, and the third was from Prime Video. Imagine, I was like, “OK, I can’t take much more dopamine.”

David Read:
No. You were levitating. Man, oh, man. Wow, dude.

Marton Szokor:
It’s the second-best thing that day. I gave much thought to how they handled it, and I was really happy to see you there, ’cause obviously I am still a listener of Dial the Gate and, of course, loving the GateWorld, work that Darren does. So I think it’s very important to involve the franchise. It was surprising to me that they did it this way. So far they did everything right. I think we can agree upon that. Really excited to–

David Read:
So far, it really has felt like they’ve been batting a thousand with the trajectory of this new thing. I know there are a lot of fans who are waiting for the other shoe to drop. You have to accept the fact that you’re not going to be in love with everything that’s created by someone who creates the next thing. And also, Martin’s not the same kind of creator that he was 20 years ago. But we’re talking about someone who has an appreciation of the lore, not the least of which reasons is that he created a quarter of it. So it’s a good place to be for us fans to have someone coming back into the fold. This is gonna be our Terry Matalas Star Trek: Picard moment, I think, for sure. But time will tell.

Marton Szokor:
It has a similar feel to it. We shall see. I’m very excited for the people who are involved, these information tidbits and news we’re getting from you and Darren, of course. So I’m really glad that it’s you who deliver the information and I don’t read it on Deadline in an article or press release or something, at least not yet.

David Read:
The more exposure that it gets on those spaces, the better as far as I’m concerned. But I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, they could’ve announced on the ISS and I’m sure they would’ve agreed to it. The fact that we got the privilege was… But I still can’t get over it. You have a YouTube channel. Stargate Seed.

Marton Szokor:
Indeed, I do.

David Read:
I was about to ask about the title of the YouTube channel, Stargate Seed. I was about to ask about the title of the YouTube channel, and then the logo here is of the Seed ship.

Marton Szokor:
Yes.

David Read:
Is SGU your favorite?

Marton Szokor:
That I can’t tell you for sure. But before they crucify me, the audiences, I would like to tell you that each show I love for different reasons.

David Read:
SGU is my favorite too. It’s fine. We’ll fight them both off.

Marton Szokor:
We’re in a good place then.

David Read:
I love them all for their own reasons too.

Marton Szokor:
It was brought to my attention that the logo looks like a certain gentleman’s logo …

David Read:
A specific gentleman’s.

Marton Szokor:
… whom I share enthusiasm for sci-fi with. At least that.

David Read:
What gave you the idea to start Stargate Seed?

Marton Szokor:
Stargate Seed is my way to share the Stargate love, seeding Stargates. I really like the concept of it. I’m mostly busy with merchandise, as you can see here, but I also do–

David Read:
Product reviews.

Marton Szokor:
Time-lapse videos, product reviews. The latest was, I think, Destiny from Master Replicas, but I also do discussion videos, such as about the new series or the video games Stargate deserves. Some things are best to discuss with the fandom.

David Read:
Absolutely.

Marton Szokor:
Concerning the reactions–

David Read:
I recognize those guys. Go ahead.

Marton Szokor:
Theory videos about the fate of the Destiny crew. I’m currently working on a video about the Furlings, of course, because …

David Read:
Oh, boy.

Marton Szokor:
… one needs to discuss the Furlings without knowing anything about them.

David Read:
Everyone knows who the Furlings are.

Marton Szokor:
It won’t be a short video.

David Read:
I wouldn’t think so. There’s a lot of mythology there to play with. Tell me about this advent calendar. I saw this thing briefly. What was this like?

Marton Szokor:
BlueBrixx, your biggest company, has released advent calendars, sort of diorama sets. It’s just a really cool concept, do something little every day. First they decided to do an SG-1/Atlantis mixed set, but last year the concept was for the feature film. Small diorama sets from the feature film. There’s a poster of it. Just small dioramas.

David Read:
How long would each one take? 10 minutes?

Marton Szokor:
Probably a quarter hour, or 15 minutes.

David Read:
Oh, really? 15 minutes? OK. Look at all these.

Marton Szokor:
Depending–

David Read:
Katherine Langford figure. This is so cool, man.

Marton Szokor:
I really enjoyed them. I did some review articles for GateWorld. I think it was suited to contribute to GateWorld since these sets currently aren’t available in the US, which is a bummer.

David Read:
Well, that swings both ways.

Marton Szokor:
But I’m pretty sure they’re working on it. Talking about mini figures. I have this crown jewel. It’s more of a recent thing.

David Read:
Did you make those?

Marton Szokor:
These are the BlueBrixx minifig collection, so far …

David Read:
That is them? OK.

Marton Szokor:
… signed by Chris Judge.

David Read:
Can you tilt it a little bit forward so we can see the back more there by any chance? Christopher’s getting in the way there but well, OK. I recognize some, I don’t recognize others. Anubis and Ra, the Wraith, obviously.

Marton Szokor:
There’s Martin Lloyd.

David Read:
Martin’s in there? Merlin.

Marton Szokor:
In the red shirt.

David Read:
Adria. OK. Very, very cool.

Marton Szokor:
So yes, Chris was really surprised that such a thing even exists, so he was asking me about trading cards, whether there’ll be new trading cards, and I get where he’s coming from, of course. I haven’t heard anything yet. I’m pretty sure we’re gonna have some additional licenses …

David Read:
I suspect.

Marton Szokor:
… but that’s to be announced, or it’s speculation.

David Read:
I need to reach out to the team that already put out the previous cards. I sure hope they get this for the next one as well because they want to keep it with the family. Did BlueBrixx create the Wormhole X-Treme Stargate?

Marton Szokor:
Yes. One moment. So they’ve released an embarkation room set, and I have built much of it into– So, existing dioramas I’ve built into the set, like Jack O’Neill thing.

David Read:
Oh my gosh, there it is. Wow, that is so cool. It’s so cool, yet so ugly. But you are a completist, so there you go. What’s your favorite piece in your collection?

Marton Szokor:
I think the minifig collection is kind of cool. Also, the ZPM, the glowing ZPM, is pretty cool. It was a fun build, the Aurora Class, with its asymmetrical shape. I didn’t need to build things twice, but it’s not so even. It has odd shapes.

David Read:
It’s one of the Atlantis’ skyscrapers, except just in flight. Sideways. And a little bit of a different colour. I personally have never been crazy about the Aurora class. It feels like it’s cobbled together. I appreciate it for what it is. My love has always just been with 304, personally. So, you’re working on the Furlings next. What else is on the way for Stargate Seed?

Marton Szokor:
I had tremendous feedback for a video. It was a mashup about the Atlantis team finding the … I think it was called Orion. The first time they found the stasis pods in the Aurora Class warship. So I mashed it up with “Gauntlet.” It was fun, but it really made people think about certain story elements within the show that could be utilized in the future. So I plan to do similar ones to those. And of course, I just imagined that while they’re asleep – Young, Rush — they could just have a similar dream state, or you could tell a story without resetting anything or without touching anything inside the ship or with the story of Universe, so you could–

David Read:
Interesting.

Marton Szokor:
It’s a sandcastle and you can tread carefully without bumping into anything there that exists.

David Read:
Don’t want to touch any of the load-bearing structures. Keep everything as is but have fun in that space. I am hoping against hope that we have some kind of answer to some of the stuff that came before. I don’t think it’s gonna happen in this first season of this thing so my prayer is that it does well enough that additional content will be assured is basically what I’m trying to say.

Marton Szokor:
I always share that thinking. What do you think about the huge gap? Because if it’s set in the here and now, as all Stargate did before, do you think they’ll–

David Read:
We’re just gonna skip over that timeframe. I think that this is gonna be set elsewhere.

Marton Szokor:
But to keep us locked to our seats, existing audiences, they could give us some breadcrumbs or some behind information. I’m not saying a spinoff, but in the first season they should retrospectively try to build up some information that makes sense, at least for a new story. I understand there are time limitations within this new streaming.

David Read:
That’s true.

Marton Szokor:
Obviously less episodes than before. We get to spend less time with the characters. They have to build a lot within less, so they have a tough job, but I trust them as writers.

David Read:
I think it’s wide open. I am eager to meet new characters and fall in love all over again. And then once that’s successful, go back and mine the past and fill in some of the details of the last 15, 16 years by the time this thing comes out. ‘Cause there’s a lot still to explore and the universe, pardon the pun, is wide open.

Marton Szokor:
I understand.

David Read:
But we’ll all be there to experience it together globally.

Marton Szokor:
It was a pain in the– It arrived so much later. You get to see these episodes upon release.

David Read:
That’s true.

Marton Szokor:
I remember typing into the Google, “How do I get a Nielsen box?”

David Read:
You wanted to be a–

Marton Szokor:
I often visited GateWorld to check out the viewing figures and I was like, “OK, I’d like to help. How do I get the Nielsen box?” So, I’m constantly in the audience–

David Read:
I think you’re bestowed one. I don’t think you can ask for one.

Marton Szokor:
Since I’m not in the US that’s out of the question. Had to learn the hard way.

David Read:
But the fact of the matter is Amazon’s got their finger on the pulse of all of this, so they have no problem accessing the data for anything at this point. That’s one of the reasons the show’s coming back. So, I really appreciate you sharing your websites with me. What you don’t know is by the time that this goes to air, stargatetrivia.com will be live.

Marton Szokor:
I saw you had auditioning for Trivia members or future Trivia members.

David Read:
Yes. That’s something else though.

Marton Szokor:
Seemed like a nice bunch.

David Read:
There was a good group of folks. Pity, we weren’t able to complete it properly because my computer crapped the mattress. But we will have a number of them, if not all of them, playing with us in our first game probably in late June I would suspect, but we’ll see about that. I wanted to know if you wanted to play trivia really quickly with this new tool.

Marton Szokor:
Sure. Let’s try it.

David Read:
All righty. Let’s see what happens. In “Critical Mass,” Marton, what does Teyla perform upon Charin’s death?

Marton Szokor:
The undying ceremony.

David Read:
You think so?

Marton Szokor:
Let’s check it out.

David Read:
It was the Ring Ceremony.

Marton Szokor:
The Ring.

David Read:
What is the Pegasus term for a Wraith attack on a human colony?

Marton Szokor:
The culling, of course.

David Read:
That’s right. What is the name of the girl now dating Chloe’s former boyfriend on Earth?

Marton Szokor:
Megan? Surely not Celina. Celina? Really?

David Read:
As far as the public is concerned, O’Neill and Carter perform…?
Marton Szokor:
Aerospace engineering?

David Read:
Deep space radar telemetry. In his noir storyline in “200,” Teal’c was keeping the streets safe and…?

Marton Szokor:
Defending the weak.

David Read:
Keeping it real.

Marton Szokor:
He did defend keeping it real.

David Read:
That’s it. And who was the voiceover for that?

Marton Szokor:
Who has it?

David Read:
Who was the voiceover artist for that clip?

Marton Szokor:
Can’t remember.

David Read:
Isaac Hayes.

Marton Szokor:
Isaac Hayes?

David Read:
Which System Lord did not negotiate with Thor on Earth?

Marton Szokor:
Whoa. Morrigan.

David Read:
That’s right. In “Miller’s Crossing,” where are Jeannie and Kaleb during their home invasion?

Marton Szokor:
They’re in the kitchen?

David Read:
Are they in the kitchen? I think they’re in the bedroom.

Marton Szokor:
In the bedroom. OK. Childhood’s End.

David Read:
Why did the people from M7G-677 die before 25? What were they doing?

Marton Szokor:
They believed it protected them from the Wraith.

David Read:
That’s right. What keeps Kull Warrior bodies functioning day-to-day?

Marton Szokor:
Goa’uld symbiote.

David Read:
That’s right. What did Ronon say he needed to learn in… This is in “First Strike.”

Marton Szokor:
Patience.

David Read:
Science. He needs to learn …

Marton Szokor:
Science.

David Read:
… some science. “I’m not very good in situations like this,” he says.

Marton Szokor:
Who goes to retrieve the Tok’ra tunnel crystals in “Last Stand?”

David Read:
“Last Stand.”

Marton Szokor:
Sam and Elliot, maybe?

David Read:
Sam and Elliot were stuck. Sam stayed with Elliot, and Elliot couldn’t really move.

Marton Szokor:
Some parts collapsed.

David Read:
Exactly. Prison camp leader Torrell described Dr. McKay’s type as someone who did what? This is “Condemned.”

Marton Szokor:
Talks too much.

David Read:
Whines and complains.

Marton Szokor:
Whines and complains.

David Read:
What does Omac say to SG-1 at the beginning of “Enigma?”

Marton Szokor:
“Leave now.”

David Read:
“Don’t help us.”

Marton Szokor:
“Don’t help us.”

David Read:
Who visits Daniel on the day of his weapons launch in “Absolute Power?”

Marton Szokor:
That’s probably Jack.

David Read:
That’s right. Very good, man. Not too bad.

Marton Szokor:
It’s tough.

David Read:
I had it on hard. You can set the difficulty level, you can set the show. As of right now, there’s French as well. I’ll give you the link so you can have …

Marton Szokor:
It’s nice.

David Read:
… a sneak peek.

Marton Szokor:
Thank you, sir.

David Read:
Absolutely. Anything you wanna leave everyone with before we wrap up?

Marton Szokor:
I think we all share the excitement for Stargate, as in the new series. I’m really excited for anything that’s gonna happen, and it’s a pleasure to see such a bright future for this franchise and its audience. Much more to come, I guess. Thank you for this.

David Read:
Absolutely. It’s a treat, Marton. Thank you for coming on and hanging out and sharing your love of the show. It means a lot to have you. That is Marton Szokor of Stargate Seed. My name is David Read. You’re watching the Stargate Oral History Project. If you enjoy Stargate and you wanna see more content like this on YouTube, do me a favor and click that like button. It does make a difference with the show and will continue to help us grow our audience. If you have Stargate friends out there, let them know that we exist and share the show, because sharing is caring. My tremendous thanks to my patrons who pull this show off week after week. I had to cross the Rubicon going in that direction. It wasn’t something that I was crazy to do, but I was so shocked to discover the number of people who were willing to participate in making this show possible week after week, and that blew me away. The show is not created in a vacuum. It really does happen when everyone comes together to pull this thing off, and I’m so thankful for all of the help. I’m out of town right now, so these are pre-recorded episodes. We’ve got a few more heading your way before I come back. I’m not exactly sure when this one is gonna be dropping, but I should be back a little bit before mid-June, so I hope you’ve been enjoying the content that we’ve been creating. Thanks so much to my crackerjack team of folks who help me pull these shows off week in and week out. Thanks to Frederick Marcoux over at ConceptsWeb who keeps the website up and going. And stargatetrivia.com is available, so go have fun with that. My name is David Read for Dial the Gate. I appreciate you tuning in, and I will see you on the other side.
