David Read:
Hello. Hey, everybody. I hope this is broadcasting because I’m blind. So, I did a thing. This is a live stream about Dragon Con and the cosplays and everyone that’s done an amazing job to share off their fandom in costume. But A Full Circle podcast just launched. GateWorld has the announcement on YouTube. They’re gonna be hopefully creating a news story to follow it pretty quickly here. I think Darren’s a little bit behind. Loud and clear. OK, thanks, guys. Hi, David. Hi. That’s gonna be following. So, cat’s out of the bag. Michael and I are thrilled. Thanks to Evie for the name. Thanks to Sarah Black for collating all of the comments to make that happen. We’re thrilled that a fan got to name it. And we’re gonna see what the next few years hold. The video’s already gotten 21, 22,000 views in 11 hours. We’re good. And we’ll see what happens next. Let’s move on. I’ve got some Stargate fans here in cosplay at Dragon Con, and we’re gonna spend some time with them and talk about the costumes. And I’m gonna try to not knock my phone off the balcony or my laptop into the throngs below. So, we’ll see what happens here. So, William, you’re with me, buddy.
David Read:
How are you?
William Murphy:
Hey. You do your thing.
David Read:
Whoops. Sorry, everyone. That was loud probably.
William Murphy:
True professionals.
David Read:
Exactly. It’s funny that you start here because the last time that I went live, I was with you.
William Murphy:
Hey, everybody.
David Read:
William Murphy.
William Murphy:
Yes.
David Read:
Come on in. This is Amy. We’ve got some room.
William Murphy:
We’re good.
David Read:
Amy, let’s fill in this…
William Murphy:
Hey, guys.
David Read:
How you guys doing?
William Murphy:
We’re doing great. It’s been a great weekend.
Amy:
Wonderful. Dragon Con.
David Read:
How many…
Amy:
I’m in the middle.
David Read:
How many Dragon Cons does this make for you guys?
Amy:
Too many.
William Murphy:
… my first one was in 1999, so…
David Read:
So, you’ve been doing this for a little while.
William Murphy:
That’s right.
Amy:
2002.
David Read:
Really?
William Murphy:
Yeah.
David Read:
How many costumes have you done over the years?
William Murphy:
A number. First one I ever did was a Black Mage from Final Fantasy I, the 8-bit Nintendo character. Literally took a witch’s hat from Party City and hand painted it orange, and then a tablecloth, hemmed for a blue robe and black underneath and was this 8-bit character running around. That was my first 16, 17-year-old William cosplay.
David Read:
There you go. So, did you build this yourself?
William Murphy:
Yes and no.
David Read:
Show off?
William Murphy:
SGU. Full on. So, pretty much screen accurate. Icarus Base. Stargate Universe. Off-world uniform. Condor vest and all that. The jacket was one of the Sci-Fi Hero StargateCommand.net [inaudible] customizations.
David Read:
Can you even get these anymore?
Amy:
This is the Condor Cross Draw. It is…
David Read:
Thank you
Amy:
… discontinued. Currently available on Galls until they sell out.
William Murphy:
So, you can still find it.
Amy:
So, I actually bought mine.
David Read:
Galls? How do you spell that?
Amy:
G-A-L-L-S
Amy:
I bought mine on Friday for 30% off. They’re on sale for Labor Day.
David Read:
Wow.
Amy:
Until they’re gone.
David Read:
I may have to get one.
William Murphy:
Crazy coincidence. We looked it up so we could finish her outfit.
David Read:
It’s so crazy.
William Murphy:
And then the jacket, which you have to modify regardless, you can find those still.
David Read:
I think I may have to do an SGU outfit.
William Murphy:
I would love it. Man, that… What a team-up this would be.
David Read:
No.
Amy:
Make it happen.
David Read:
… if you wanna buy that, I’ll pay you back with interest.
William Murphy:
Let’s talk right after this.
David Read:
If you have access to it, I’ll…
David Read:
… because…
William Murphy:
Done.
David Read:
… they’re gonna all come and grab one.
William Murphy:
… done.
David Read:
These things, you can’t get them anymore.
William Murphy:
That’s part of the struggle.
David Read:
That’s the thing. That’s really cool.
William Murphy:
So, the tragedy of this outfit is- The whole shebang I put together for the 2011 Creation Vancouver Convention anticipating the set tour. But what happened in 2011? So, we went to Vancouver literally all dressed up with nowhere to go.
Amy:
Mere weeks after they disassembled the set.
William Murphy:
After they struck the set.
David Read:
That’s sad.
Amy:
It was so sad.
William Murphy:
But still very happy to have this together. Love to show it off.
David Read:
So, have you always watched Stargate together? What’s been…
Amy:
When we first started dating, Stargate Universe had just premiered in the weeks that we first started dating. So, we were long distance. William would download the weekly episode of SGU on iTunes.
William Murphy:
That’s definitely outdated.
Amy:
Not to date ourselves. We would get together that weekend and watch Stargate Universe. It’s how we first started dating.
David Read:
That is so cool. Thank you guys for being here.
William Murphy:
No, it’s been a pleasure.
David Read:
These people are family. So, I’m so privileged to be able to start off with them, and thanks for sharing your cosplay.
William Murphy:
We’re gonna sync up. We’re gonna make this happen.
Amy:
We’re gonna make it work.
William Murphy:
Dave, all the best to you, as always.
David Read:
Thank you.
William Murphy:
See you guys.
David Read:
Bye. You were first. So, come on over. Remington, are we organizing? OK, sweet. Come on in. What’s your name?
Teresa:
My name is Teresa.
David Read:
Teresa. Welcome to Dial the Gate.
Teresa:
I know.
David Read:
How you doing?
Teresa:
Am I doing well?
David Read:
You’re doing well. So, how long have you been a Stargate fan?
David Read:
Speak up.
Teresa:
2020-ish. The pandemic, and I had been reading fan fiction that had crossovers into different fandom. And I’m like, “I really need to see this.” So, I started watching with Atlantis, and then it snowballed from there.
David Read:
I know the snowball.
Teresa:
And I started writing fan fiction.
David Read:
You did?
Teresa:
Yes.
David Read:
Do you ship anyone?
Teresa:
Yes, I do. I do the Sam and Jack thing. Also, Teyla and Sheppard. It’s the “will they, won’t they?”
David Read:
I know. I’m really sad that they didn’t go anywhere with really any of that. Is this a custom? Tell us about your outfit.
Teresa:
This, army surplus store, and my lovely name tape I get on Amazon. This I made. I have a degree in theater.
David Read:
You do?
Teresa:
… with an emphasis in costume design, and I have patterns for jackets. And there’s a military-style jacket that I have had, and I altered the pattern to make this part. And I’ve got one for tomorrow that’s McKay. I do Rodney McKay for the photo shoot. So, I have that one.
David Read:
Represent Dave while he’s not here.
Teresa:
I’m on his server. I have one of the later-season ones with the collar patches here and here. It was a job getting it to fit. But I do it custom myself. I made this into pockets.
David Read:
Do these unzip, or are these for show?
Teresa:
This unzips.
David Read:
Fully functional.
Teresa:
Like I said, pockets.
Teresa:
I had to cut off the zipper tabs on the front.
David Read:
We sold the originals through Propworx. Here. Just a second.
Teresa:
Sorry.
David Read:
And the zippers were so well-concealed, and they were a pain in the butt sometimes. But they were so cool. Teresa McQuarrie did a great starting point.
Teresa:
And I also started making props a couple years ago. And I have my personal shield.
David Read:
The turtle brooch.
Teresa:
The turtle brooch. So, the great thing…
David Read:
Invulnerable.
Teresa:
Invulnerable. But you have to have the Ancient gene. Now I gotta find this… I don’t know where it went. So, if you have a magnet- And I had magnets last year, and I had it, a different one.
David Read:
Magnets.
Teresa:
So, it sticks to…
David Read:
If you know, you know.
Teresa:
It sticks to the costume. This has a magnet in the end. So, if you touch it, it will glow. I have the little pockets for magnets on the bottom on the back. I did this, and it stuck to my thing. I’m like, “It’s glowing, and it’s stuck to me.”
Teresa:
It’s got felt on the back now.
David Read:
You must have the ATA gene.
Teresa:
There you go.
David Read:
That’s awesome. Very, very cool. I don’t wanna run out of time. Which one of these are…
Teresa:
They are all Stargate ribbons.
David Read:
They’re all Stargate… yes.
Teresa:
They are all quotes from Stargate characters. And I will have them tomorrow at the Stargate photo shoot.
David Read:
This one on the top here is one of my f…
Teresa:
Shoot.
David Read:
I had my buddy over when this…
David Read:
… episode aired, and I laughed so hard. This is in my top 10 Stargate quotes.
Teresa:
That is also something that I got from Joseph Mallozzi. I asked him on Twitter, “What is your all-time favorite quote from Stargate…
David Read:
And he said?
Teresa:
“… Stargate Atlantis?” He said, “Carter, I can see my house.”
David Read:
“I can see my house.” I didn’t know that about Joe. Here’s one for Michael.
David Read:
If I can figure this thing out there. There we go. A couple more.
Teresa:
That one is a little different. That one’s because of Jewel.
David Read:
And this here, who said this one? Is that a Shepherd quote?
Teresa:
That is Shepherd.
David Read:
It is.
Teresa:
Remember when he’s on the outside of the hive with Michael and saying, “Operation?”
David Read:
Yes. That’s exactly right.
Teresa:
This will likely end badly.
David Read:
I’m thrilled to finish on this one. Undomesticated equines could not remove me. So, do you design these?
Teresa:
I put them together.
David Read:
I’m sorry, I did them upside down. I’m so sorry.
Teresa:
It’s OK, it happens.
David Read:
It does.
Teresa:
I keep doing that to myself too.
Teresa:
But this one is also for Jewel, because she’d been getting a lot of online bullying about her appearance.
David Read:
Beauty has no age. Screw those people. Very cool.
David Read:
That’s awesome.
Teresa:
Screw the haters.
David Read:
Screw the haters. Love them, but screw the haters. That’s really cool. No, this is awesome. Now, how does this work? Do you send these off to be printed? Or are these PNGs that you make?
Teresa:
No, there’s a couple of companies online that make ribbons. And you can find them in the chats. I can’t remember which one I use right now. Ribbons Galore, I think.
David Read:
But it’s a thing.
Teresa:
They have a thing where that you can design your own ribbon, and you can upload GIFs. And this is one of the free ones. The diamond is the free one. The jewel is the free one. But I had small PNGs of the emblems, and I found some small pictures to…
David Read:
Exactly, to dress them up.
Teresa:
… pinpoint who it is.
David Read:
That’s really cool.
Teresa:
And to pinpoint who to show.
David Read:
Atlantis was a beacon into the dark. When we weren’t wiping out part of the Pegasus Galaxy from mistakes. Beauty has no age. It’s pretty cool. I’m keeping this one.
Teresa:
Sometimes… you can have one of each.
David Read:
We’ll work something out.
Teresa:
We’ll work it out. But some of them are quotes from people, and some of them are obscure. A lot of people don’t guess which one is Ronon.
David Read:
It’s okay.
Teresa:
But it’s fun finding your favorite quote on there.
David Read:
What was the Ronon quote?
Teresa:
“I try to accept the things I can’t change.”
David Read:
Very original. That sounds like Ronon.
Teresa:
That is a Ronon quote when Rodney heals his scars on the back, and there you go.
David Read:
That was a subtle scene. You don’t have to see anything. “I just healed him.” I love that line.
Teresa:
Subtle, it’s there. And I felt like that encompasses—he accepts everybody for who they are.
David Read:
That’s it. Except Wraith.
Teresa:
Except the Wraith. He wants to kill as many as possible.
David Read:
I can’t blame him…
Teresa:
I don’t blame him.
David Read:
Thank you.
Teresa:
Thank you.
David Read:
Thank you so much for sharing. This is really cool. I apologize my vertically challenged self. Who else do we have? Come on in. You wanna do a twofer? Especially if you’re friends…
David Read:
I would appreciate… You wanna come on in as well? We’re three wide, so come on in. I’m gonna put this here for y’all.
Deanna:
Sure.
David Read:
So, I’m David. What’s your name?
Deanna:
Hi, I’m Deanna.
David Read:
Deanna, pleasure.
Emerald:
Emerald.
Deanna:
Emerald.
David Read:
Emerald. Pleasure to meet you both. Welcome to Dial the Gate. SG-1 Seasons 9 and 10. So, how long have you guys been fans? May I hold this one?
Deanna:
Absolutely.
David Read:
Did you make this?
Deanna:
I had a friend 3D-print it, Steph, and then another friend, Claire, paint it. It was a group effort done over the course of four days.
David Read:
Does this open or anything?
Deanna:
It does. It doesn’t stay very well. But you can hold it open.
David Read:
Can I do it without destroying it?
Deanna:
Yeah.
David Read:
Look at that. I’d love to show this to Michael. It would drive him crazy. So, he absolutely hated them. So, fun fact, if you go and look at his publicity photography, Daniel, when he’s by himself, he’s not wearing one. He said, “No, I’m not doing it.”
Deanna:
Really?
David Read:
I’m not strapping that on myself. That is not happening.
Emerald:
Crazy.
David Read:
So, he was like, “It’s ridiculous.” He said, “This is absolutely…” But I’m reminded of a quote from a TV show called Paradise. “He’s an asshole, but he’s our asshole.” It’s ridiculous, but it’s ours. It belongs to us. So, that’s really cool. How long have you been a Stargate fan?
Emerald:
My mother rented the VHS in about 1995.
David Read:
Of the film?
Emerald:
Yep. I was 11 years old. And it hooked me, but then I saw later on when I was a child that there was a TV show. I didn’t watch it by myself, but when I was later in college, it was on every single day after I got back home. That’s when Sci-Fi Channel was doing, I think, two episodes a night. So, I got so addicted, I bought all of the DVDs. I skipped all my classes and binged Stargate. And that’s been that way since.
Deanna:
Love it. For me, I can’t remember the exact year. I grew up with my parents showing it. Hi, Mom and Dad. They’re watching.
David Read:
That’s cool. Hi, all two of you out there watching. Thank you.
Deanna:
But they would play it on TV probably 20, 25 years ago, and I grew up with it, to the point that I saw the Get in the Gate commercials. I remember that.
David Read:
Stargate. 10 out of 10.
Deanna:
And they would all do a “ah” in front of the Stargate.
David Read:
You could watch the show.
Deanna:
I know.
David Read:
Those were fun.
Deanna:
… it was fun. That was my connection to it, and at the time it was fun and interesting. My dad would pretend he wouldn’t know what was happening and have me try to re-explain it, and he had a lot of fun watching me talk through “This is happening and because of this,” and he really enjoyed me–”
David Read:
Enjoyed you getting into it.
Deanna:
Yes, exactly.
David Read:
That’s really cool.
Deanna:
Exactly.
David Read:
Take notes, my parents. They were trying to be like, “You should get a job.”
David Read:
“You maybe should focus on school.”
Deanna:
It was so much fun.
David Read:
… I’m so envious of you right now, and I swear to God. That’s really awesome. It’s really…
Deanna:
But because I was younger, I found fan culture late in terms of your show and the Discord. But better late than never. I’m really happy to be here.
David Read:
We are one big happy family.
Emerald:
I only joined the Discord a month ago.
David Read:
Welcome.
Deanna:
Awesome.
Emerald:
I’m on X. Some people out there might actually know me as JiltedValkyrie.
David Read:
You’re JiltedValkyrie?
Emerald:
Yes. On Twitter.
Deanna:
Dang, famous.
David Read:
No, I don’t. But that’s…
Emerald:
I work in the industry too. The cancellation sort of hits home for me too because I work at…
David Read:
Don’t get started
Emerald:
… I work at Trilith. And the work’s going away. That’s one more project that we can’t bid on.
David Read:
Are you in LA?
Emerald:
No, I’m here local.
David Read:
You’re here local. Didn’t Marvel leave?
Emerald:
They did.
David Read:
Rachel Luttrell’s husband was here working, and now there’s… He’s elsewhere now. But it’s such a… It’s going international. LA is a dust bowl. Stargate wasn’t even gonna be there anyway. We really need to rethink our choices in terms of how we’re gonna approach the future with AI, with managing people’s expectations on what is possible given this brave new world that we live in, with everything moving faster than we can keep up. So, at the very least, we’re all in it together. If we can hang on to each other in our little fandoms and the things that keep us going, I think we may have a shot. We’ve been around for a little while. I seriously don’t think our goose is cooked. I could be wrong. But, guys, thank you for coming on and sharing your fandom.
Deanna:
Absolutely. We’re so happy to be here.
David Read:
Ah, look at that P90. Awesome. There we go. May it not jam on you. That’s it. Thanks, guys. Here, grab this from you here. Oh, here. Thank you so much.
Deanna:
Thank you.
David Read:
You guys take care of yourselves, OK? Who is next?
River:
Who’s next? Me? OK. There they are.
David Read:
Hi. Apparently you’re next. May I put this on you?
River:
Yes, please. I have a…
David Read:
[Inaudible]
River:
Place for it.
David Read:
There we go. Hi, I’m David.
River:
Hi, I’m River.
David Read:
River?
River:
Yes.
David Read:
Good to meet you.
River:
I’ve been the one asking questions.
David Read:
Really?
River:
Yes.
David Read:
I’m thrilled to have you on. Is this your first Dragon Con?
River:
No, this is my third, but this is my first ever SG cosplay.
David Read:
Really? This is a great start.
River:
… it’s very basic. Thank you. This is my Sam around base.
David Read:
That’s exactly right.
River:
Off doing experiments. Science. Leave me alone. We’re at the computer.
David Read:
It’s for the science.
River:
It’s for the science.
David Read:
Wow. How long have you watched the show?
River:
I think I started when I was 8 or 9. When I first moved to this state, we…
David Read:
So, you’re a Georgian.
River:
I’ve lived in Georgia since I was eight, I think. And we started watching it on the Sci-Fi Channel, and that was one of the first things we saw. Hooked the TV up moving into a new house and Stargate was on. They were currently running, I think, Seasons 9 and 10. So, I jumped in on the very end. But we absolutely fell in love with it. I have three older brothers, and we all watched it.
David Read:
You all watched it together.
River:
We all watched it together.
David Read:
That’s fantastic.
River:
My whole family.
David Read:
I cannot speak enough to how my relationship with my dad was maintained largely through our interest in science fiction. We’re so similar and so different and so similar. It’s one of those things. You never can quite unpack that with your parents.
River:
No, I understand.
David Read:
But I have no siblings. Did it grease the wheels of those bonds …
River:
Yes.
David Read:
… to have something …
River:
Yes.
David Read:
… to hold onto? Were they older or younger than you?
River:
My brothers are significantly older than I am.
David Read:
So, you’re a baby.
River:
The closest is seven years older than I am.
David Read:
That’s a surrogate parent.
River:
And then there were two more. So, for us, Sci-Fi and fandom and all of that in general was a huge way to connect as siblings and as people. And my brother was here with me yesterday. And we got to go… And he helped with the Save Stargate table. I’ve been working there with the others, and that was really cool.
David Read:
Wow. So, did you help with the table, or is it just him?
River:
No, I also am working with him.
David Read:
What’s going on down there? Can you let us know what’s happening?
River:
So, Marriott Marquis across from the Walk of Fame. We have a table with the US banner. I don’t know if there’s another banner in the US.
David Read:
There’s a couple of different ones around the country.
River:
We have the banner that was signed by David Hewlett and Rachel Luttrell.
David Read:
Rachel.
River:
We have that one. And yesterday I took it and we got it signed by Michael and Ben. And this morning, I think Claudia came by and she signed it.
David Read:
I saw the picture of that.
River:
So, we have the physical banner …
David Read:
That’s great
River:
… and then we have people signing up on the online petition, and we’re giving out ribbons, stickers, and we have replicator chips.
David Read:
Replicator blocks.
David Read:
Keep them away from other replicator blocks. You’ll be fine.
River:
I know. And the first time I saw these at a Dragon Con, I freaked out, and I’m like, “Why are you giving these away? Destroy them.”
David Read:
This is a bad idea. What’s the web address for Save Stargate?
River:
It’s savestargate.com.
David Read:
savestargate.com. Wow. And we’re at 120,000 now?
River:
We’re at 121. We broke 121 today.
David Read:
I’ll take it.
River:
But as you said, the relationship with your dad and Stargate, I feel that as well is very important. Last year I had brain surgery, and I’m the brain surgery girl from Chris’s panel last year. And…
David Read:
That was a great moment.
River:
… since then I have still been watching the show. I finished my personal watch through of it right after that panel. There was nothing I could do on the couch but watch Stargate. But since then I’ve been doing a full chronological watch through with my dad who never got to see the whole show ’cause he was always working. And no one else wanted to watch more Stargate with me because it had been on for so long. They were like, “Get that off the screen.”
David Read:
You know who you are. Everyone who is everyone else.
River:
I know. My brothers. But my dad has been watching it with me. And we just got to Season Nine, and he’s never seen a lot of those episodes. So, we’re having a great time together.
David Read:
I’m glad, ’cause Season Nine is tricky for some people to digest. It was such a major transition.
River:
It really was.
David Read:
I loved Ben… Were you in there?
River:
Yes.
David Read:
So, briefly, Ben made a comment about how they were setting up his opening shot for the show. The new hero walks up to the gate, acknowledges the gate, comes back. It closes in on the hero and it ends. And Ben was like, “No.”
River:
No, I’m so glad.
David Read:
“The hero’s the gate. I’m gonna pass by the camera. It’s not gonna come into me.”
River:
I’m so glad he did that.
David Read:
And that’s Ben.
River:
That was such fitting shot.
David Read:
That’s really cool.
River:
That was so much better. Thank you so much.
David Read:
Thank you for hanging out. Appreciate you stopping by.
River:
I’ll see you again sometime.
David Read:
Sounds good. Thank you.
River:
You’re welcome. Woo, bye. Bye, everybody.
David Read:
Who’s next?
DJ:
Hi, David.
David Read:
Hello, fellow David.
DJ:
Indeed.
David Read:
It is David, right?
DJ:
I go by DJ, though.
David Read:
DJ?
DJ:
Yes.
David Read:
So, DJ was my childhood nickname.
DJ:
Really?
David Read:
It was. My dad stopped calling me that a few years ago. I don’t know why, and every time he calls me by my actual name, I prickle on the inside. I’ve never said that to him. So, now he knows. So, I love this. SGC IT guy.
DJ:
Yes. That’s my cosplay. I am the IT guy. I got my ethernet cable.
David Read:
Look at this.
DJ:
I got my rolls of tape. I got my tool kit. I even got my trouble ticket.
David Read:
And it has multiple pages. There we go. That is so cool. Did you build this?
DJ:
I did.
David Read:
Incident category, gate buffer sequence lag, biometric HID. H-I-D?
DJ:
Yes.
David Read:
What’s a HID?
DJ:
It’s your key-card access. You typically swipe it.
David Read:
So, it doesn’t stand for anything?
DJ:
Human interface device.
David Read:
That’s what I’m talking about. Resolution action, resolve. Escalated to Chief Master Sergeant Walter Harriman, Dr. Bill Lee, Colonel Samantha Carter, Dr. Jay Felger, Sergeant Sylvester Siler, Dr. Rodney McKay, General George Hammond.
DJ:
Or write in.
David Read:
Or write in. That’s it.
DJ:
I had only so much room.
David Read:
This is so cool, man. So, do you have these printed up?
DJ:
I did. You can have a sheet. Pull one off for you.
David Read:
Let’s do that right now. Thank you.
DJ:
We don’t have to fill it out, but…
David Read:
I’ll get this back to you.
DJ:
… you can.
David Read:
Very good.
DJ:
Whatever you wanna do.
David Read:
That darn gate is always switching over to the space commander’s feed on all the screen… Anyway, tell me about your Stargate fandom and your love for the franchise.
DJ:
It started in 1994 when I was in college.
David Read:
1994. Was that a significant year for the franchise in some way?
DJ:
It’s when the Stargate movie came out.
David Read:
It was.
David Read:
You were a big movie day one.
DJ:
And I was there on release night.
David Read:
You were?
DJ:
Yes, I was.
David Read:
So, are you a big fan of egyptology, or what was your hook?
DJ:
I love sci-fi. I love disaster stuff, anything space, whatever. And I did like the egyptology stuff to begin with. Loved the movie when it came out. Then, of course, a few years later, heard about SG-1 coming out, and I’ve never looked back. It’s consumed everything. Everything I could get my hands on with Stargate, SG-1, Atlantis, Universe, even Catherine.
David Read:
Catherine has its moments. For the episodic, I wouldn’t recommend that anyone watch the episodic version, but Catherine definitely, there is some good stuff there. There are a couple of genuinely good scenes.
DJ:
There are.
David Read:
That’s cool, man. So, how long have you had this getup?
DJ:
So, I actually created this for Dragon Con.
David Read:
This one?
DJ:
Yeah.
David Read:
It’s our global debut.
DJ:
This is the debut of SGC IT guy. I put it together over the summer. I’ve been coming to Dragon Con for, this is my eighth, so since 2018. And I only got into cosplay a couple years ago. So, this is my first Stargate cosplay. Took some inspirations. I actually work in IT, and the garrison uniform was like what Daniel Jackson wore when he was inside SGC. So, I kinda couldn’t get the right blue, but that’s OK.
David Read:
No, it works. You do what you can with what you got. I’m trying to get Gary Jones on the phone here so that I can show this off to you, and I’ll have it on speaker.
DJ:
I met Gary here a couple years ago, too.
David Read:
But he hasn’t seen you in this outfit.
DJ:
He has not.
David Read:
So, Gary, pick up. Pick up. Anyway, if you can stick around—
DJ:
I can.
David Read:
I’ll have him call me, and I’ll stick the microphone to this. “Can you call me on FaceTime? I have someone to show you.” I’ll call you over.
David Read:
So, this is awesome. Thank you, Dave. Thank you, DJ.
DJ:
You’re very welcome.
David Read:
It’s weird to say that—
DJ:
I know.
David Read:
… to myself.
DJ:
Do you want your own—
David Read:
I do want my own. Thank you.
DJ:
… one of these dog tags that I made for my cosplay?
David Read:
I’m so going after your job. This is great.
DJ:
Do you want any more you can hand out to anybody?
David Read:
Can I have one for Jonesy?
DJ:
Absolutely.
David Read:
Thank you.
DJ:
You can have as many as you want, man. Seriously, you want a handful? I got lots.
David Read:
No, no, no, no, no. You must give some for others here at the con.
DJ:
I will give them, yes.
David Read:
Thank you very much, sir.
DJ:
Thank you.
David Read:
Appreciate you.
DJ:
I will stick around.
DJ:
There we go.
David Read:
That’s awesome. You may think that you’re in a concrete box, but there is some cosplay variety. And speaking of variety, do you wanna start off as this and then put it on?
Elaine:
Sure.
David Read:
… So, I can hear you this way.
Elaine:
You want me to put it on first?
David Read:
Let’s start off with it on. I think I’m OK, so thank you. I’m keeping in mind that the next person is shorter. Check Bastet… It moves. It’s alive. And it’s run on a Wii controller. What’s your name?
Elaine:
My name’s Elaine.
David Read:
Elaine. May I?
Elaine:
Yes.
David Read:
I’m gonna show this thing off. Man, oh, man. Look at this. This is so cool. Is this its first year?
Elaine:
Yes. It’s its first week.
David Read:
Cat?
Elaine:
[Inaudible]
Elaine:
Sorry.
David Read:
Magic wand, make my monster grow. I’ve just dated myself. I’m gonna hook this on you here. Here we go. Elaine? Elaine?
Elaine:
Yes?
David Read:
Elaine. This is magic.
Elaine:
Thank you so much.
David Read:
… this is really cool.
Elaine:
… I really appreciate it.
David Read:
Look at this thing. Man, oh, man. Look at the craftsmanship there. If you wanna take it over here and show them. Look at that. So, how did you do this?
Elaine:
This is out of EVA foam.
David Read:
But how? Did you hammer it into pieces?
Elaine:
No.
David Read:
You just wrap it?
Elaine:
Yeah, you carve different pieces. You glue it together. Heat gun to form the shape of it. This is actually matte gel, and you dab the paintbrush with the matte gel to get the texture.
David Read:
How do you keep it from being sticky? Is it naturally not adhesive?
Elaine:
No.
Elaine:
The matte gel is a gel. It’s like paint almost.
David Read:
So, it doesn’t wanna come off.
Elaine:
No.
David Read:
I’ve been repainting my house. I’ve been figuring out how to negotiate latex paint.
Elaine:
And this is foam clay, so you make little ornate rivets.
David Read:
Let’s show the front of this here. So cool. I see the eyes. So, this glows?
Elaine:
Yes.
David Read:
Wow. So cool.
Elaine:
And this is just a mask, and it’s built up with foam, foam clay. That’s all that is.
David Read:
Are you comfortable in it?
Elaine:
Yes. Very comfortable.
David Read:
Look at these arms there… Here, can I grab it from here?
Elaine:
Yeah, sure.
David Read:
Is this okay?
Elaine:
Yeah.
David Read:
Meow. Show off. That’s so cool.
Elaine:
And this is just moldable foam.
David Read:
You’re my second Bastet that I’ve seen. Not here, but ever.
Elaine:
I was gonna say, “Here? Where? I missed that.”
David Read:
No, at the Dragon Con. Her name is Linda Furey, GateGabber. She did a Bastet outfit. And look at that skirt. So, back up a little bit so everyone can see.
Elaine:
I made the skirt.
David Read:
Wow.
Elaine:
And I made the shirt.
David Read:
There we go. See? Knee pads and any port in a storm.
Elaine:
Da, da, da.
David Read:
There we go. That’s really cool.
Elaine:
Thank you.
David Read:
So, is this your first costume?
Elaine:
No. I actually started out with a Serpent Guard. And I did it twice ’cause I couldn’t get it right the first time. It’s a matter of learning. I had no idea what I was doing on my first Serpent Guard.
David Read:
You have to start somewhere, though. And you find your weak spots, and you move forward.
Elaine:
I had a lot of weak spots.
David Read:
But you’ve gotten better at it?
Elaine:
Yeah. It looked like a frog. And then I actually had a better shape to it, ’cause I had no idea what I was doing.
David Read:
I love that people are willing to… I have no problem with the battle-dress uniforms or anything like that. But to be completely creative and to be brave enough to start from scratch on something this complicated impresses me more than anything.
Elaine:
And this is just foam. And I’ve got a little snack bag. Gotta have your snacks.
David Read:
… you have to make it work. And you do.
Elaine:
And this is just moldable foam. And you work it to make it look like a piece of wood. This is just styrofoam…
David Read:
It’s awesome.
Elaine:
… with moldable foam.
David Read:
Thank you for sharing.
Elaine:
Thank you so much…
David Read:
This was a treat to have you on.
Elaine:
… for having me. I appreciate it.
David Read:
Let me grab this from you here, if you don’t mind. I really should have a microphone handler. This is really tricky.
Elaine:
And thank you.
David Read:
Appreciate you coming by. This is what we do. I’m sorry. Live television, everyone. Thank you, Elaine, for stopping by. You take care of yourself. Hey, who’s next? Who’s been waiting long enough? Yes. You’ve been waiting here for a while too. How are you? I’m David.
Lacey:
Hello. Hi, David. I’m Lacey.
David Read:
Lacey.
Lacey:
Yes. Nice to meet you.
David Read:
You were walking by…
Lacey:
I was walking by.
David Read:
… and we stopped you. Just down here.
Lacey:
That works.
David Read:
So, how long have you been a Stargate fan?
Lacey:
Since I was about 7 years old. And I’m currently 19, so do the math.
David Read:
12 years.
Lacey:
Yeah.
David Read:
What’s the Replicator growing…
Lacey:
The Replicator.
David Read:
… growing a plant, like Hawaii vibe.
Lacey:
He’s part of this pro…
David Read:
Can I take this off?
Lacey:
Yeah.
David Read:
He’s sprouting a… We’re gonna have organic Replicators soon. Stay tuned. So, I can’t imagine anything more terrifying than a hybrid between the human form and the bugs.
Lacey:
I’ve also got a little Replicator piece here.
David Read:
Absolutely. These are really cool.
Lacey:
But his name is Rob Johnson. He’s my son.
David Read:
I’m sorry?
Lacey:
His name is Rob Johnson. He’s my son.
David Read:
You’re wearing your son?
Lacey:
No. He’s on my head. He’s along for the ride.
David Read:
He is your son?
Lacey:
Yes, he is my son.
David Read:
OK then.
Lacey:
Don’t… yet. It…
David Read:
I’m not judging.
Lacey:
No.
David Read:
I’m processing.
Lacey:
No, I found him like a lost dog on the side of the street.
David Read:
Really?
Lacey:
I found him in a little box…
David Read:
Really?
Lacey:
… and I took him home and raised him.
David Read:
You deactivated him, right? Before you brought him here.
Lacey:
We won’t get into that.
David Read:
There are a few Replicator future friends of his that are crawling around. That’s how you get Replicators. That’s really cool.
Lacey:
You can replicate from one. Really.
David Read:
No, two… Ark of Truth breaks this logic, but Sam says that two full replicators are required to make additional replicators. So, there is a, if you know what I mean. Reese, when she was on base, she had to have found a fair more bit of metal than a pair of scissors. But then you had the Asgard core in Ark of Truth produce one, and he skitters off.
Lacey:
There’s also the Replicator Queen.
David Read:
But he wasn’t a queen.
Lacey:
No?
David Read:
Yeah.
Lacey:
That’s true.
David Read:
‘Cause it probably went and got bigger shoulder pad wings and was the one in the Jefferies tube later on in the show. I didn’t mean to bust your bubble either.
Lacey:
No, you’re good.
David Read:
My goodness. OK. So, non-Dragon Con goers, and con goers in general, are probably going, “What the hell?” Can you please explain what these are and what the Dragon Con tradition is with all these as we get closer and show off some of your battle…
Lacey:
They’re all folded up currently.
David Read:
Very good. Your battle trophies.
Lacey:
These are ribbons. You get them at Dragon Con for talking to people or recognizing someone’s cosplays or any sort of event. If anybody has custom-made ribbons, they will give them out to other people. And there’s typically competitions to see who can get the most ribbons.
Lacey:
In the Marriott, there are a bunch of levels.
David Read:
A bunch.
Lacey:
… a bunch. It gets really high. And they’ll do beard badges, is what these are called. They’ll do beard drops from really high up on high levels.
David Read:
They go to the top, and then they drop them. You soon figure out why orbital tethers won’t work. It’s the same kind of logic with gravity.
Lacey:
Some people have insane beard badges. This is from this year, these two days.
David Read:
Man.
Lacey:
But last year I also got a whole lot, and I’m thinking, if I continue getting more, to make something out of them. An outfit or something.
David Read:
That’s wild. That is wild. Good for you. You’re young. So, I have to say, using you as my example… Can I see your Zat?
Lacey:
Yeah, you can.
David Read:
Is this a mold? It’s a smaller one, too.
Lacey:
It is smaller. It fits my hands. I have small hands.
David Read:
That’s why. I so appreciate, I’m so thankful that younger generations are continuing to find and embrace the series. Because that’s the only way that it continues to survive.
Lacey:
If you keep bringing people into it.
David Read:
That’s right. Because us older guard, the people who created Gatecon, the first… Stargate convention, they’re getting up there. There’s so many fans from the earlier years that we’re losing. And the show continues to show that it works by bringing in people who weren’t even born when much of it aired.
Lacey:
I sure wasn’t.
David Read:
And it’s a testament to its evergreen nature and the way that it works. It’s really a pleasure to have you.
Lacey:
It’s a pleasure to be in the fandom. Almost everybody I’ve met has been so warm and welcoming, and they’ve all been really cool.
David Read:
Most of us. Some of us are a little…
Lacey:
There’s one or two that I’ve met that weren’t the greatest.
David Read:
Everyone is welcome. And it’s, “Hey, you do you. I’m gonna go this way.” But that’s one of the cool things about Stargate fandom is it’s not so enormous that you get lost in the shuffle. At least that’s been my experience. And it’s an awesome place to cosplay.
Lacey:
It sure is. I’ve actually had these patches.
David Read:
Look at that. It’s like a bronze.
Lacey:
I know.
David Read:
That’s really cool.
Lacey:
It’s not like the classic, pure white kind of deal.
David Read:
No, I like it.
Lacey:
But I’ve had these patches for years and years and years. I got the vest and this jacket from a secondhand military store. And I dyed the vest because originally it was camo.
David Read:
You dyed this black.
Lacey:
Yes, I dyed this black.
David Read:
Wow, that’s pretty good.
Lacey:
Thank you.
David Read:
Wow.
Lacey:
And I got a bunch of other little things from that as well. But I iron these on, and if they need it, I’ll sew them to keep them more stable. But I was really happy to be able to finally put them to use ’cause I’ve had them for…
David Read:
The patches?
Lacey:
Yeah, the patches, for just about as long as I’ve been in the fandom itself, which I think is neat.
David Read:
That’s awesome. Thank you for sharing and thank you for coming by.
Lacey:
Of course.
David Read:
Can I take this from you?
Lacey:
Yeah.
David Read:
Thank you so much. I appreciate you taking the time.
Lacey:
Of course. I appreciate you. Thank you very much.
David Read:
Absolutely. Thank you.
Lacey:
It was a pleasure.
David Read:
Absolutely. Namaste. We’re at Dragon Con 2026, and I am thrilled to be able to share my little corner of the web here with so many creative people who are passionate and love this thing as much as we do. Guys, is my connection OK? It just says LTE, and it’s literally transferring through here. So, I think that we’re all right. Looks good. I don’t know how clear the signal is, but if it’s garbage, then we will turn around and upload the version that’s here, being recorded on site. All right. Very good. Do I sound good? Thanks, guys. Awesome. You have been patiently waiting, so let’s come on over.
Sharon:
Rob Johnson.
David Read:
Can I hang this from your ribbon? Wait. Let’s show off the shirt first. Come on in. We printed these? Or did you print these?
Sharon:
I had them printed.
David Read:
You did. I’m David.
Sharon:
Sharon.
David Read:
Sharon. Have we talked?
Sharon:
Yes.
David Read:
Sharon, very good. Thank you so much for being with me.
Sharon:
Thank you.
David Read:
Very good. You’re steeped in the project.
Sharon:
Yes.
David Read:
How’s it going? Go ahead.
Sharon:
We had 1,000 signatures in a little over 24 hours this weekend.
David Read:
That’s good.
Sharon:
We’re getting close to 1,500. And we had 821 last weekend.
David Read:
These are not enormous numbers.
Sharon:
No, they’re not.
David Read:
But inch by inch, it’s getting done. And the thing that I think impresses me the most about you guys, it is this indomitable spirit to keep clicking along and count every single one. Because every single one matters. It is a true grassroots effort. There is nothing AstroTurf about this. And I cannot applaud you guys enough. I keep on getting pestered to be more involved. And there’s no bandwidth. And Darren and I can set the tone. Jenny, I think, is participating in some way.
Sharon:
She’s my mentor.
David Read:
She’s awesome.
Sharon:
She is excellent.
David Read:
Alyssa Voll, James Kerfoot, you guys have made a space for yourselves here in this fandom that I think is going to last long beyond this threshold of whatever this is that Amazon has inserted us into. I don’t like it. But here we are, and we’re doing it together.
Sharon:
We’ve decided to do something more permanent.
David Read:
Are you authorized to share this information?
Sharon:
I can say very little.
David Read:
OK, good, because I…
David Read:
… I can say very nothing. So, all right. You do you. I blew up a franchise earlier this week by revealing Alternate Reality, so… follow that one.
Sharon:
So, next year’s the 30th anniversary…
David Read:
Of SG-1
Sharon:
… of SG-1.
David Read:
July.
Sharon:
We wanna celebrate it. The campaign, the fans, we all wanna celebrate it.
David Read:
Regardless of any other announcements?
Sharon:
Correct.
Sharon:
‘Cause it’s not for Amazon.
David Read:
No, Amazon is…
Sharon:
It’s for us
David Read:
… is the current mantle holder, and that’s all. It would behoove them to, if not, promote in some way, at the very least step back and let you guys do your thing, so long as the IP isn’t getting stepped on. And that’s not our intent. We’re gonna carry it above our heads like pallbearers until they decide to make it come out of the box again. Can you say any more? Anticipate something.
Sharon:
Things are coming. Amazing things are coming. Some things are not set in stone yet.
David Read:
No.
Sharon:
We are just now deciding things. So, for you all, stuff is coming. But we also wanna say that we are protecting the IP. That is one of our number one goals, but also keeping the community the way it is. We don’t wanna see the community fall apart.
David Read:
No. There’s … Information is going to come out, and people are gonna get discouraged. And you’re gonna have people who are there baiting online. Some of them aren’t even real. Some of them are bots. We have no proof of this, but look, dead internet theory, that is a component of it, and there are people who are going to claim to be in the positive side of this thing, who are gonna post and throw stuff out there to see if they can knock stuff over. And that’s the way that we’re built. It’s human nature. The rest of us have to continue to work to building something positive together. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. One of these days, I will put it on a shirt. We have to make good ripples. We’re here for a blink. And if you’re not here to spread positives to someone else in the world, what are you doing?
Sharon:
So, if you talk to anyone on the campaign, I’m the most patient. And I don’t believe that at all.
David Read:
Of course, because they chose her to put up with me.
Sharon:
I’m not patient. But I am positive, and I’ve been on the side of life where I wasn’t positive. It took me three days to recover from the announcement. And then Michael said something, and that was Michael saying, “It’s time to do it.” So, I did it. And I never expected it to be this involved. It takes a lot out of me being here. It takes a lot out of my team. But we’re doing it because of the community. These people that you just interviewed have all been helping me.
David Read:
Keep going.
Sharon:
This is my team. Whether they volunteered recently or they’ve been doing stuff for weeks, they’ve been involved.
David Read:
These are just the people who are standing here.
Sharon:
And this isn’t even half of them. We’ve got people back at the table who wanted to be here.
David Read:
Not everyone could be.
Sharon:
So, these people make it so I can do it. And there’s so many more that wanna be involved. So, if you wanna be involved…
David Read:
How?
Sharon:
… contact the campaign. It’s [email protected]. Our team can pick it up. Join the Discord, savestargate.com/discord. You can find us on X. You can find us on Facebook.
David Read:
Please sign.
Sharon:
Sky.
David Read:
No matter what political clique you are it doesn’t matter because sci-fi is the place where we all intersect, so long as you have an open mind. So, if you don’t do X, fine. If you don’t do Discord, I understand a lot of people don’t. It’s OK. It doesn’t mean that you can’t participate in the larger group. So, if you wanna get hung up on something, no one’s gonna stop you. But if you wanna participate in something positive that in one way or another is going to contribute to shaping how fandom looks when the next one comes out, because there will be a next one. If it’s not Matin Gero’s… I always look back to Battlestar Galactica. Are you a fan?
Sharon:
I am a 1978 fan.
David Read:
Then you’re gonna contradict what I’m about to say. The fandom was really against the new one. They were really against Starbuck becoming a woman. They saw Ron Moore’s product, and by the end of Season One, so many of them…
Sharon:
My brother.
David Read:
… they stepped back and they were like… Next Generation was not a one-off. It can be done. Ron Moore on that one too. I’m not going to speak for you, but at least in terms of a favorite. But I’m going to continue to be positive about whatever it is that Amazon’s going to create next because nihilism and self-loathing and entertaining the cosmic horror of… It’s a TV show. Let’s get over ourselves, for God’s sake.
Sharon:
No, it was great.
David Read:
It’s not for me. I did that right alongside you for those few days. I wept in another grown man’s lap on the Swiss border. … then I got over it.
Sharon:
I may not have liked what came out of the new Battlestar Galactica. But it was great.
David Read:
You can’t…
Sharon:
You can’t say it wasn’t great.
David Read:
… you can’t say that it didn’t grow the fandom and make awareness for the original.
Sharon:
Now, do I like 1980? Eh.
David Read:
That’s the in-between one for those not in the know but the point is the same. Whatever they’re gonna do next… You don’t have to endorse it. But find a way to share the parts of the franchise that you love with the people who are there with you, and you’re gonna find some positive vibes heading back your way. Make good ripples. Sharon, I can’t thank you enough.
Sharon:
These people. These people need thanks too. Your team, our team, the people who are just barely involved or wanna know what’s going on, you all are giving us the positive vibes back, and that’s how we’re able to do this. And we’re getting signatures from people who haven’t watched in years, who didn’t know what was going on, from fans of other franchises … in solidarity.
David Read:
… who believe in a fandom that they see across the hall every year. Across the convention floor. Hell, I’ll sign it. It’s for them. Speaking for them.
Sharon:
One guy really, he said that, “I’m doing this for the community.”
David Read:
And you may think, “It’s a signature. Who cares?” It’s your honor. It’s an endorsement of something that you believe in.
Sharon:
And I’ve told other fandoms, I’ve said, “I’ll sign your petition.”
David Read:
That’s right.
Sharon:
I need to go over to the Warehouse 13 and talk to them. Eddie McClintock went to Dayton and the university my dad taught at, and at a university my nephew graduated from. And we love Warehouse 13. So, it’s not just us. The community we’re building, we wanna share with everyone.
David Read:
That’s it. Saul is extraordinary. I can’t wait to have him and Michael on at the same time in this new show. You have Michael’s high energy and then Saul’s quiet, contemplative nature in terms of answering the questions. Michael’s gonna be running circles around him. But I think that there’s gonna be some great stories there. And that’s awesome. What are they trying to do with it, real quick?
Sharon:
They have a fan table.
David Read:
They’re wanting to get it relaunched?
Sharon:
Eddie wants to bring it back.
David Read:
He does.
Sharon:
Jerry O’Connell…
David Read:
So, does he…
Sharon:
… wants to bring Sliders back.
David Read:
Wow, he does.
Sharon:
Yes.
David Read:
Everything else has been brought back at this point. Why not entertain the possibility of seeing where these characters are by now?
Sharon:
Grimm’s getting a movie.
David Read:
It’s true.
Sharon:
What else?
David Read:
It’s true.
Sharon:
There’s a list of ones they are bringing back.
David Read:
Everything’s back around again. All things being equal, I would prefer new stuff, if I had to pick between repeat old stuff or only new stuff. But we have an opportunity at both. We need new IP. We need more Project Hail Mary. We need more stuff like that.
Sharon:
I actually watched it on the plane here.
David Read:
For the first time?
Sharon:
Yes.
David Read:
This big.
Sharon:
This big.
David Read:
Amazed, amazed, amazed. So good.
Sharon:
… and it was a very short flight, so I got maybe…
David Read:
You didn’t finish it.
Sharon:
… half of the way through.
David Read:
So, it’s not done for you.
Sharon:
No.
David Read:
You are going to cry.
David Read:
I think I know your spirit by now in this conversation, and you will.
Sharon:
But I have to say, my mom and dad watched it. Mom did a comparison between Stargate and it, and it’s almost…
David Read:
95%.
Sharon:
Yes.
David Read:
The Venn diagram between Stargate and Project Hail Mary is like that.
Sharon:
She loved it.
David Read:
Found friendship. Discovering your purpose.
Sharon:
And their community, I popped my head in.
David Read:
They have one here.
Sharon:
They’re supposed to, but I haven’t actually met. But I’ve popped in their groups, and it’s the same comedy. It’s the same repeating lines.
David Read:
It’s Ryan.
David Read:
And it’s James Ortiz, who was the primary controller for Rocky. It warms my heart to see that amazing new IP can be adapted from books and everything else. This is a great time to be in any kind of genre fandom. Sharon, thank you so much.
Sharon:
Thank you.
David Read:
Appreciate you. I’ll grab this from you.
Sharon:
And thank you all.
David Read:
Thank you all for sticking with me here. Let me see what’s going on here real quick. 109 concurrent viewers. We don’t deserve that. We’re not that big a deal. Mr. Brown, I think you are of the current ilk. Give us a twirl. How are you, my friend?
Mr. Brown:
I’m well. How are you?
David Read:
I’m good. We have been corresponding for a while now. We didn’t meet in person until yesterday. And I’ve got a new buddy.
Mr. Brown:
Thank you.
David Read:
… I’m thrilled to have you in my life. Do you know the significance of this color?
Mr. Brown:
You’re gonna have to enlighten me.
David Read:
This is a gold… How did you pick this? Did you like the gold…
Mr. Brown:
Desert tan.
David Read:
… because it’s desert tan?
Mr. Brown:
Yeah.
David Read:
You know the only time that we see these?
Mr. Brown:
Tell me.
David Read:
Out of Mind. It doesn’t look exactly like this, but…
Mr. Brown:
I wanted something that was appropriate for my coloration.
David Read:
Yes. Your coloration indeed. How far does your Stargate fandom go back?
Mr. Brown:
Let’s see. That would have been 2003. Maybe 2002.
David Read:
Thank you for your service, by the way…
Mr. Brown:
Thank you.
David Read:
… before I get into any further.
Mr. Brown:
Thank you.
David Read:
Can you tell me your rank and what your service history is…
Mr. Brown:
Yes.
David Read:
And I’m not ignoring you. I’m looking something up here.
Mr. Brown:
You’re fine. So, despite what it says on my hat…
David Read:
It does say colonel on my uniform.
Mr. Brown:
It does say colonel on my uniform. I am not a colonel. I am a staff sergeant in the US Army. I teach advanced mathematics.
David Read:
God.
Mr. Brown:
I used to be in artillery. I technically still am an artilleryman, but I don’t go out and blow things up anymore. Now I teach people how to blow things up with math.
David Read:
And he’s an actual rocket scientist.
Mr. Brown:
I am an actual rocket scientist. I am.
David Read:
I’m gonna embarrass you for a second here.
Mr. Brown:
Good Lord. OK.
David Read:
It’s no audio. That was him making a Stargate Universe review after, I think, Ginn died?
Mr. Brown:
Yes, that was immediately after Ginn died.
David Read:
What? He’s so adorable. I wanna… Can I do the… Make the cheeks bigger, and I’m gonna grab the cheeks.
Mr. Brown:
I’m sorry, I’ve gotta take a peek at the chat here.
David Read:
They’re on the other side. They’re 20 seconds behind. Good luck.
Mr. Brown:
I see.
David Read:
… eternity of anticipation. I’ve run out of things to ask people, and I don’t wanna sound like a broken record.
Mr. Brown:
You are welcome to ask me anything. I am an open book.
David Read:
That’s the thing. Because you and I have so much going on, I’m trying to narrow this down to something that’s appropriate with this. Have you built props, or are you a prop collector? I haven’t brought that up at all.
Mr. Brown:
Yes.
David Read:
And we talked about that a lot yesterday. Let’s start this off by saying: So, you’re an electrician.
Mr. Brown:
Yes.
David Read:
He’s actually coming over to my house to electrify or restore the LED panels that are inside the wedge of the SGU Stargate. Because they pulled the cables out. So, we know that the glyphs on the front can light. And in exchange for a tour and maybe a couple of things that I have in a box somewhere that I can give you…
Mr. Brown:
You’re too kind.
David Read:
… we’ll see. Don’t send me flowers yet. You’re gonna bring this thing back to life again.
Mr. Brown:
Yes.
David Read:
And this has been something that I have been wanting to do since I got it years ago. Thank you for that. What’s your background with the Stargate props?
Mr. Brown:
I’ve been doing cheap at-home props of every variety for years and years and years, ’cause I was that creative kid. I wanted the thing I saw on screen.
David Read:
Do you have any on you?
Mr. Brown:
I have that one that I acquired last night.
David Read:
This is not a setup. Ah. I’m still me. I’m nobody else. Wow.
Mr. Brown:
So, we’ve got that.
David Read:
Remington from SG-1 props.
Mr. Brown:
Yes. Big thanks to him. I have this.
David Read:
Did you make this?
Mr. Brown:
No, I did not.
David Read:
Is this an original?
Mr. Brown:
No.
David Read:
It’s not the right shape.
Mr. Brown:
Correct. I got that for cheap on eBay. I don’t even wanna say where I got it from.
David Read:
OK. eBay?
Mr. Brown:
Yeah, other than eBay, I…
David Read:
We got Pearl.
Mr. Brown:
… don’t intend to promote the seller.
David Read:
We’ll leave it there.
Mr. Brown:
Because it is the wrong shape, and if you look very carefully at the glyphs, they are painted on.
David Read:
The runes?
Mr. Brown:
Yeah.
David Read:
OK. Wow. OK. As I promoted this thing.
Mr. Brown:
I also have a few replicator blocks. I printed these.
David Read:
Really?
Mr. Brown:
I could not find my naquadah sample. I have a mineral that looks just like naquadah.
David Read:
Wow, OK. In the words of Daniel Jackson, “Ooh, that’s nice.” That’s really cool, man. I’ve got… My battery’s dying here, and apparently my feed is buffering. So, we’re gonna wrap this up before it winks out. Anything that you wanna say to Stargate fandom? Anything that you want to send us off with?
Mr. Brown:
What the…
David Read:
Sign the petition.
Mr. Brown:
Yes, sign the petition. Absolutely. There are more of us than they realize, or if they do realize how many of us there are, they are being willfully ignorant. And I’m trying to be as polite as possible.
David Read:
Yes.
Mr. Brown:
We are here. We obviously support it. I was just talking with somebody who has a relative that was not born yet when SG-1 went off the air, and they are currently watching it. Huge fan.
David Read:
I stood in line at a CVS yesterday behind a father and son who were watching Season Nine of SG-1 at home, patiently waiting for the announcement that the son’s little sister was about to be born. So, we’re everywhere.
Mr. Brown:
We are.
David Read:
We’re not going anywhere. We’re gonna continue to stay polite, but resolute.
Mr. Brown:
I may have said a few unkind words in the past, but I do my best to…
David Read:
It’s fine. We all are allowed to have a bad day, except for caregivers and cops. And when servicemen are on duty.
Mr. Brown:
Thank you.
David Read:
Thank you for your service.
Mr. Brown:
Thank you, sir.
David Read:
I appreciate you. Continue to fight the good fight. Thank you for wrapping this up with me.
Mr. Brown:
Of course. I’m glad to. I’m honored, in fact.
David Read:
Thank you so much. Guys, I have no idea what the hell episode number this was. Thank you to my amazing mod team. Thank you to Anthony for adjusting the time because I, once again…
