Last year David came across an amazing sight on a Facebook thread — an actual dialing Stargate from Universe. He reached out to the designer to see if one could be made for the Dial the Gate set. Witness the result.

David Read:
Hello everyone, I’m David Read. Welcome back to Dial the Gate, the Stargate Oral History Project. We’re in year five and over the course of that time I have been blessed with connecting with so many creative people from around the world who have been inspired by Stargate. So, not only are we a database of oral histories, but also, it’s very important to me to continue sharing the creativity that Stargate has inspired in people. Last year, late 2024, I came across a guy by the name of Jaren who had created a working Stargate Universe gate. Everything but the puddle is in this thing, and I was blown away. I reached out to him. I told him who I was and asked him if he would be interested in making a piece like it for my show. He made me one and he made it very clear that he’s not mass producing these things. He’s an engineer. He’s a tinkerer, so he was really interested in the art of making this exactly right. What you’re about to see is the second of two that he’s made, and that’s it. He’s not gonna be making them for fans unfortunately. Having said that, I still wanted to unbox it in front of you and get my reaction recorded for the first time, because it was mesmerizing and I really can’t wait to see what he’s done with this one and the mechanical improvements that he’s made in it to make it work. Let’s open it up and see what he’s created. I think this comes in Jaren Trading Limited. I think that this is a Master Replicas piece if I’m not mistaken, the original box that it’s in. Let’s have a look. Please God, don’t let me damage it. “This side up,” he says. He packs well, I’ll give him that. He has created a lovely foam wrapping. I think we got a Stargate in here. The question is how to get to it. Let’s see what he says here. “David Read, Dial the Gate,” and he spelled my name right. All right. Let’s see here. “Greetings, David. Inside the package is your very own miniature Stargate crafted with care, patience, and a lot of trial and error. The main build took about two months, but the following few months of tweaking and redesigning took longer than I expected to get it fully functional, while also improving every aspect of the original design. While the process may have claimed a toaster …” –Orlin– “… I think the result was worth it. Hope you enjoy your mini Stargate.” Wow. All right. My gosh. Look at the build inside that. Gate instructions. All right, let’s go back to this. Let’s open it up. Feel a little like imitating Harlan. I need a knife with a jagged edge. Beautiful. He was working on this for — We talked actually in July, so it’s right now late February. He’s been tinkering and developing and all-around tooling this in his brain while he’s been working on it physically as well. I’m sure he’s looking at this going, “Oh, don’t do it that way. Please, God.” Actually, I’m wondering if I can cut this and lift it. I need scissors. Look at that! Look at the detail. When I plug it in, I’ll change positions here so you can really get a look at it. Let’s just get it out. I’m realizing it’s darker on this side. Does she come off? You gonna mosey? Not mosey-able yet. Wow. Look at that. My gosh. Let me change things around so you can see better. All right. Now, I realize my head is getting cut off, but no one’s here to see my head, so let’s have a look at it from here. And all the detail. Instructions. “When not in power, please power off the gate via its power switch.” Check. “When powered on, please avoid touching the back of the gate with anything metal as the traces are exposed and could cause a short.” Noted. “Before dialing, please keep the area near the gate clear so nothing can get caught while the gate is spinning. When the gate powers on, it may make some small, slow movements. This is normal as it’s calibrating its position. It may do this occasionally after dialing to correct for any amounts of drift that may occur.” This guy. “When using the button at the back, please wait a few moments before starting another action so as not to accidentally trigger the wrong action. The back covers on the back of the gate are dust covers to protect the USB port and SD card that were used during programming, development, and debugging.” Oh my. That’s how you keep track of these things. Jibarran virility enhancers. I didn’t like that episode, but awesome. Kudos to you all the same. All right. That’s actually really funny. Wow. Dude, you are nuts! These lights are changing color. Let me check this. Wow. How cool is that? “To start dialing the gate, press the button on the back in, and step away and allow it to begin to dialing one of nine known addresses that includes Destiny and Earth. After it finishes the full dialing sequence, you should unpress the button before beginning another dial.” Maybe the coolest thing I’ve ever seen in person. “To start dialing the gate, press the button back in and step away and then allow the gate to be– To cut off the gate while it is dialing or while its wormhole is active, unpress the button and the connection will be cut after a few moments. To toggle chevron display mode, toggle the button twice. Press and unpress it twice and then wait.” Wow. “To toggle AI lighting display mode, toggle the button three times. Press and unpress it three times and then wait.” Three times. “To exit display mode, toggle the button once, press and unpress it. To trigger an incoming wormhole, toggle the button four times. Press and unpress it four times and then wait.” Wow. “To cut off the gate during an incoming wormhole, toggle the button once.” Wow. “To activate the Easter egg mode, power off the gate and press the button in and leave it. Then flip the power switch back on. Unpress the button to exit this mode.” So, this is what we started with, I think. Wow. Party night at the disco. “The gate will automatically remember and restore its last set light display mode when power is turned off after enabling one of the light modes.” There are no words to convey my amazement at the artistry and the engineering and the whole design of bringing something like this together. It’s amazing. There are some amazing people in this community. Thank you, Jaren. This was quite the gift. I am looking forward to making it part of the set for Dial the Gate Season Five and here in the future. Thank you so much for this. This means a lot to me, and I’m grateful that we can share the design, the quality of your work with thousands of Stargate fans. The inside of this thing is friggin’ extraordinary, mind-blowing. Thank you. Thank you very much. I’m David Read for Dial the Gate, and I’ll see you on the other side.
