David Read:
Hi, guys.
Remington Phillips:
Hello.
Martin McClean:
I could have started going, I’m sorry, but I could have started going… That’s gonna be in the blooper reel.
David Read:
Ugh.
Remington Phillips:
It has to be in there. OK, you ready?
Martin McClean:
I’m still filming.
Nicole West:
No, no, I need a second now. ‘Cause he just slammed it so good.
David Read:
Hey, guys. How you doing?
Remington Phillips:
Hey, David.
David Read:
SG-1 Props, welcome to my house. I’ve got a few items to show you from merchandise and a few rare pieces that were not necessarily commercially available but got into people’s hands. I’d like to start off with this.
Nicole West:
Ooh.
Remington Phillips:
10-Year Celebration book.
David Read:
Stargate SG-1-Celebration of 10 Years.
Remington Phillips:
Wow.
David Read:
When the show entered its 10th season, they had these made.
Remington Phillips:
This book was presented to certain people in Stargate, or was this sold?
David Read:
Hardbound editions were presented to Stargate cast and crew. This is Brad Wright and Michael Shanks’ signatures. I don’t recognize everyone’s signatures in this, actually. I’ve gotten some extra ones since. GateWorld got exclusive rights to sell the soft bound copy on their website for years and years and that’s how I got this one.
Remington Phillips:
These books are not available anymore?
David Read:
They are not available. Every once in a while, one will pop up at a Stargate auction, ending up going for several hundred dollars.
Nicole West:
It’s funny. I saw the quote in there that he said he could never get his hair to do like Kurt’s. We were just talking about that.
David Read:
That’s right.
Remington Phillips:
There are some photos and pieces of artwork in here that I don’t remember seeing outside of this book.
David Read:
There is a ton of stuff in here that you won’t find really anywhere else. There is some production photography, but in other places… love this one, this one of Rick.
Remington Phillips:
That’s fantastic. Oh, my goodness.
David Read:
You can’t really get these anymore. Every once in a while, one will pop up on eBay. It’s basically their family album.
Remington Phillips:
This is a very, very nice…
David Read:
Collector’s item.
Remington Phillips:
It is. I’m thinking, the coffee book format is always elegant, but this is possibly one of the more elegant pieces of Stargate merchandise that I’ve ever seen.
David Read:
Yep. That’s right. “Charlie Cohen. If you see this man, thank him. Not just because he’s been a huge supporter of our show at MGM for the past 10 years, but because he’s seen every one of our episodes and proudly calls himself a fan. Please say “thank you, Mr. Cohen,” if you happen to see him. We promise you it won’t be thanks enough.” I have been trying to get the man on my show, so one of these days I’m hopeful. It’s a great Stargate scrapbook.
Remington Phillips:
This is fantastic. You’ve got some autographs in there. What are your thoughts on continuing to get additional autographs?
David Read:
I’m not a crazy autograph person but I could see myself in terms of taking this to more events.
Remington Phillips:
Hey, the puppets.
David Read:
The puppets? Ah, yes, the puppets. Very much so. This will just go on and on. It’s a great collector’s item if you get a chance to get your hands on one.
Remington Phillips:
I love that. That’s gorgeous.
Nicole West:
Lovely.
David Read:
Completely recommend it. I have other pieces. There was a little Stargate game in development for a while called Stargate Worlds.
Remington Phillips:
Stargate Worlds. I’ve heard of this.
David Read:
MMORPG.
Remington Phillips:
Who was it that was working on Stargate Worlds?
David Read:
I was working on it…
Remington Phillips:
That’s right.
David Read:
… as a community manager. Not directly involved with the game itself, but we developed a few tchotchkes for different events. Please don’t break.
Nicole West:
My God. That is so much fun. It’s great, ’cause you wanna really…
David Read:
It’s a stress ball slash…
Nicole West:
… grenade, but it’s a grenade. If you think about it, just imagine you just…
Remington Phillips:
Chuck it into a…
David Read:
We had about 100 of these made, I think, maybe not even. We gave it to the staff.
Remington Phillips:
These never made it into E3 or other Expo’s?
David Read:
No. They may have. I’m not entirely sure. Isn’t that cool?
Remington Phillips:
Awesome. I’d never seen anything for Stargate Worlds other than a T-shirt and some of the posters that you have, some of the artwork that you have.
David Read:
I’ve got another Stargate Worlds item and I forgot about it until you mentioned it. This came out before I got onboard.
Remington Phillips:
Look at that. Stargate mouse pad.
David Read:
The mouse pad, when the mouse pad was a big thing. This was our first render of an Asgard. This is what Unreal 2 or 3, I think it was Unreal 3. This is what our Asgard probably would have looked like.
Remington Phillips:
Now, Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment was the name of the development studio?
David Read:
That’s correct. The studio.
Remington Phillips:
OK. Who owned Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment?
David Read:
A guy by the name of Gary Whiting. I believe he was… What was he? I don’t remember. GateWorld has all the articles.
Remington Phillips:
I see.
David Read:
We had a president, that was not Gary. That whole thing is a sad story and one of these days I’m hoping to have some of the developers on who brought Stargate Worlds to life. Hopefully for Season Four, but we’ll see.
Remington Phillips:
Very cool. This is great. This is great. These are great little items for you to remember your time on Stargate Worlds.
David Read:
Along with the poster up there. The poster is really the thing that I love the most, because it’s signed by pretty much everybody.
Remington Phillips:
Beautiful. It’s got all your friends on it and it’s got…
David Read:
Yep, a few enemies.
Remington Phillips:
Beautiful.
David Read:
I’m kidding. A little bit of merchandise. You guys seen this?
Remington Phillips:
Quantum Mechanics.
David Read:
Quantum Mechanics put this out. QMX put this out. I’ve never opened it…
Remington Phillips:
QMX made the F-302 and they made the Death Glider. They were supposed to make more but they never really released a whole lot of Stargate items. They did some posters, but this is probably, I would say these two ships were the pride and joy of their collection of what they did for Stargate.
David Read:
Which other ships were there?
Remington Phillips:
It was just the Death Glider and the F-302, that’s all.
David Read:
So, they did do a Death Glider?
Remington Phillips:
They did. So, this is an unboxing video?
David Read:
This is an unboxing video. It’s about the size that I expected. I was meaning for you, Martin, to bring your piece, because I wanted to compare the size.
Martin McClean:
It’s very close to that, very close.
Remington Phillips:
You’ve got a base for this, which would be hidden under this panel right here. The acrylic rod connects your ship to your base. I used to have one of these.
David Read:
You did? What happened to it?
Remington Phillips:
I sold it.
David Read:
That would do it, wouldn’t it? There we go. More or less. I really wanted to see the piece. They did a great job in terms of detail. Look at that.
Remington Phillips:
Beautiful paint work too. You can tell that this was painted very carefully.
David Read:
Is this hand-painted?
Remington Phillips:
It would be hand-painted, yes.
David Read:
Wow. Look at that. Absolutely cool. Never really had a look at it.
Remington Phillips:
A rare example of a nice licensed piece of Stargate history.
David Read:
Thank you, man. Know what this is?
Remington Phillips:
I know what that is. Tick tock.
David Read:
Just tick tock? Just one look at the box?
Remington Phillips:
We bought one of these from a lady who had it in Chicago.
David Read:
How much did she charge you for it?
Remington Phillips:
$300.
David Read:
Probably. 10th anniversary commemorative watch.
Remington Phillips:
This is a very rare item that was released under license. It’s got a beautiful box.
David Read:
Master Replicas did a bang-up job.
Nicole West:
It’s been on there for a minute.
David Read:
It’s been on there for a minute. Actually, we’re gonna leave it.
Remington Phillips:
Does it work?
David Read:
It works. Look at this. Isn’t that cool?
Nicole West:
That was, I think, the selling point for me when I saw that. I was like, “Oh, OK, no. I have to have this!”
David Read:
That is so well done.
Remington Phillips:
Very classy. Very classy.
David Read:
It has nine chevrons. Stargate is there.
Remington Phillips:
You can tell that when they released this, they wanted it to be not only an elegant piece, but to be presented in a beautiful way.
David Read:
That’s right.
Remington Phillips:
With this box that it comes in, this metallic plaque that caps the box. They spared no expense.
David Read:
They did not, absolutely. It’s definitely one of the cooler pieces of merchandise that I have in my collection, for sure. There are a few things here that probably the average Joe does have. We got that.
Remington Phillips:
The TV Guide. Was this the first TV Guide cover for Stargate SG-1?
David Read:
Did they do more than one?
Remington Phillips:
Yes. I believe they did one with Amanda on the cover.
David Read:
Really? OK.
Remington Phillips:
After this. I believe this was the first TV Guide that had Stargate on it. It may have only been one of two.
David Read:
Definitely.
Remington Phillips:
It may have only been one of two that was done. I remember in ’97, the local TV Guides that would come out with the local newspapers. I remember seeing Richard Dean Anderson on the cover. That was the first time I’d seen that they were coming out with the Stargate TV series when it originally aired.
David Read:
It’s still pretty legit. I always thought there was only one.
Remington Phillips:
CD cards.
David Read:
With a Z.
Remington Phillips:
With a Z.
David Read:
Evidently. I don’t even know what these have on them. Images, episode clips, game screensavers, character profiles and production art.
Remington Phillips:
These make quite the sound when they spin up in a CD-ROM drive.
David Read:
I bet they do. Have you done this?
Remington Phillips:
I have. I’ve spun these.
David Read:
I’d very much be interested in plugging one in and seeing what happens. This is a cool idea.
Remington Phillips:
You have to have a tray. You can’t use a slot drive.
David Read:
No. Slot drive wouldn’t work. That’s really cool. Do you remember seeing anything on them that is really cool?
Remington Phillips:
I remember seeing the artwork.
David Read:
Really?
Remington Phillips:
Everything is contained within their UI. You have to run through their interface in order to view the media.
David Read:
Creation Entertainment.
Remington Phillips:
We know them.
David Read:
Came out with a series of Stargate stamps back in the day.
Remington Phillips:
This is legitimate US postage?
David Read:
Yes. That’s correct.
Remington Phillips:
Write David a letter and you’ll get a reply with one of these stamps on the outside of the envelope.
Nicole West:
I am a stamp fan.
Remington Phillips:
SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.
Nicole West:
I love the Atlantis ones.
Remington Phillips:
Janet Fraiser got a stamp. Ba’al got a stamp.
David Read:
Carson Beckett.
Nicole West:
Doctor Beckett.
David Read:
These were really cool. I was tickled when Creation went and did these. Powered by Endicia, apparently. Pretty legit stuff. Creation also did another piece.
Remington Phillips:
I know they did some T-shirts and they did coffee mugs and things like that. What do we have, David?
Nicole West:
No. They’re so pretty. Look at it. You can never eat off of it.
Remington Phillips:
Dinner is being served.
David Read:
Yes. Dinner is served. Turn ’em around.
Nicole West:
You’re only allowed to use your fingers.
Remington Phillips:
10th anniversary.
Nicole West:
Actually, no. It says you can’t use it for food.
David Read:
You can’t?
Nicole West:
No, not for food use.
David Read:
“Not for food use. Food consumed from this plate may be harmful. Decorative art object. Care: wipe gently with a damp soft cloth. Do not put in the dishwasher.” There we go. Creation didn’t just do stamps; they also did commemorative plates.
Remington Phillips:
These are gorgeous and, from the numbering I’m seeing on the back, extremely limited.
David Read:
118 of 144.
Remington Phillips:
They did not produce many sets.
David Read:
Nope. Put that one there. No, no, no. We’re gonna get to these. That’s Atlantis.
Remington Phillips:
We have some more Stargate SG-1. Look at this.
David Read:
I love these. They’re so cool.
Remington Phillips:
The original team.
David Read:
Then, Atlantis. Wow. Look at these.
Remington Phillips:
Look at these.
Nicole West:
I like these. These are my favorites.
David Read:
These were 60 of 144 that I’ve got. McKay, Ronon Dex and Teyla. They did a good job with these.
Remington Phillips:
These are pieces of artwork in every sense.
Nicole West:
I like how they gave them each symbol.
David Read:
Absolutely. I think these are the only Stargate collector plates ever created. I think they created some for the movie. Did they make plates for the movie?
Remington Phillips:
I’ve never seen plates from the movie made.
David Read:
Plates? No plates?
Remington Phillips:
No. Zippo lighters.
David Read:
Really?
Remington Phillips:
Yeah.
David Read:
They made official merchandise?
Remington Phillips:
For the Stargate movie?
David Read:
For the Stargate movie.
Remington Phillips:
Zippo made multiple kinds of lighters.
David Read:
For Stargate the film?
Remington Phillips:
Stargate the film.
David Read:
Wow. I did not know that. My Stargate merchandise from the film is very limited.
Remington Phillips:
That stuff is very old and it seems like it’s a little more easily accessible than some of this SG-1 and Atlantis stuff though, because…
David Read:
Because? That’s the real question.
Remington Phillips:
These items were not really produced in any kind of mass scale.
David Read:
Ah, and the Stargate film stuff was?
Remington Phillips:
Absolutely.
David Read:
I’ve come across the toys again and again. It’s when they were in the launching such and such and launching so-and-so phase… they added spring-loaded stuff to the merchandise. Another Stargate item that I didn’t even know existed until 2019, Christmas ornaments.
Nicole West:
This is such a fun one.
David Read:
This is a gift from you, I believe.
Remington Phillips:
Absolutely.
David Read:
I don’t even think I’ve looked at them. Maybe I did. Heirloom Ornament Collection from American Greetings produced these. I nearly lost it.
Remington Phillips:
It survived. It did.
David Read:
I don’t think I’ve actually looked at this. Look, it’s a dial home device.
Remington Phillips:
A DHD.
Nicole West:
If you pull the …
David Read:
[ornament sound ]”All I’m sayin’, just for the record, this is the wackiest plan we’ve ever come up with.” I never knew that.
Remington Phillips:
You didn’t?
David Read:
[ornament sounds] “Indeed.” “Off-world activation.” “So, what’s the plan? Find the Stargate? Find the Stargate? That’s the plan?” “For crying out loud.” “Welcome aboard SG-1.” “Where’s the fanfare, General?” We did kind of save the planet, sir.” “Again, it should not get old, General.” “All I’m saying, for the record…” That’s really cool. I didn’t know. I have no words. So, they did two of them. They did this one…
Remington Phillips:
Yes, this was the first one.
David Read:
And the next year they did one more?
Remington Phillips:
Yes.
David Read:
Of O’Neill and a Replicator.
Remington Phillips:
Correct.
David Read:
I’ve got it, but I don’t know where it is.
Remington Phillips:
It’s funny because American Greetings, at the time that these came out, had retail stores across North America. Pretty much any mall, any shopping mall you would go into, there’d be an American Greetings store or Carlton Cards, both the same company, and you’d be able to buy these ornaments. So, when these came out, you could get them at most shopping malls, which is pretty rare for anything Stargate SG-1 to be that available.
David Read:
Press button on side of ornament to see chevrons light up and hear lines from the series. Then then it’s in French. Very cool. I’m thrilled that these exist, but until I saw you hand it over to me, I didn’t know it existed.
Nicole West:
Now, did they make this while you were working there, or is that…
David Read:
You worked there, that’s right.
Remington Phillips:
Yep, I was at American Greetings when these were released, which, to my luck, gave me preferred pricing.
David Read:
Is this the number?
Remington Phillips:
This it the ornament number, yes.
David Read:
That’s very cool. Do you see these eye once in a while on eBay?
Remington Phillips:
They are very rare. At the time of this filming there is only one available on eBay and I believe it is the other one.
David Read:
How much is it running for?
Remington Phillips:
It think it is around $50.
David Read:
That’s not awful.
Remington Phillips:
Wait till Christmas comes up and it will…
David Read:
Sky rocket.
Remington Phillips:
You cannot find these, they are rare.
David Read:
I have a couple more pieces to show you. These are not necessarily merchandise, they are promotional. We have talked about Legends Memorabilia a little bit and I have one of the first pieces they came out with. This has been taken from the Vacuform walls of one of the Goa’uld motherships. Certificate of Authenticity, Legends was really good about that. At some point I will find a place on my wall to put this up.
Remington Phillips:
That will look great on any of your walls. Legends was selling these at conventions but they are very hard to get now.
David Read:
They know how to make display pieces; they did a good job. The following, our last pieces, were not for sale but were for promotion. When Syfy picked up the series, they came out with Stargate for beginners. It’s an explanation as to the show, the premise, the franchises. It goes on and on. “Facts and Fiction: Colony on Abydos in ancient times did disappear overnight. Fiction: The colony based on Abydos ascended in nano seconds as a result of Daniel’s timely intervention.” So, I am guessing this is after Stargate transferred to the Syfy channel? I am trying to remember what this was created for.
Remington Phillips:
Is there a date?
David Read:
No, I read through it and I thought that was what it was for. I am clearly mistaken. I’d love to hear from someone as to what this is.
Remington Phillips:
I have never seen this before.
David Read:
I had never either, before this.
Remington Phillips:
I wonder if this is something internal for the Syfy channel.
David Read:
It could have been. I don’t know how I got it now that I think about it. This was one of their models. It stood about yay tall and it was at Gatecon for a few years.
Remington Phillips:
I am familiar with that gate. Oh wow!
Nicole West:
That is fantastic.
Remington Phillips:
Look at that!
David Read:
This is for the Season Eight/Season One premier.
Remington Phillips:
This is a press kit? Wow
David Read:
That’s correct.
Nicole West:
Love that.
David Read:
Here, play with that. You’ve got SG-1.
Remington Phillips:
This is nice. These discs are barcoded in an interesting way. Even graphics behind the discs, they put a lot of attention into this. A lot of press kits tend to be a throw-it-together…
Nicole West:
And pack it.
Remington Phillips:
A binder with some pages and some eight by tens. This is very intricate.
David Read:
Loose pages, I’m not crazy about this. Cast bios, make little booklets. People are gonna lose these things. Episode synopsis.
Nicole West:
Definitely the first press kit I’ve ever felt the need to buy.
Remington Phillips:
They weren’t for sale. If you get one, it’s only because somebody saved it and didn’t throw it away. That’s gorgeous.
David Read:
They did a really good job with that. I’m pretty sure this is a press kit. It looks like for Season Seven. There’s one more press kit. I’m disappointed because the batteries don’t work anymore. It’s a huge shame. I’m gonna ask to see if Darren’s works.
Remington Phillips:
Wow.
David Read:
These used to light.
Remington Phillips:
My goodness.
David Read:
They don’t anymore.
Remington Phillips:
Now that is a work of art.
David Read:
I could have this removed and…
Remington Phillips:
With a little bit of heat, that can be checked.
David Read:
We’re gonna have to have a discussion about that then, because they did such a good job.
Remington Phillips:
Those pages are gorgeous.
Nicole West:
Beautiful.
Remington Phillips:
I can’t believe that that was nothing but a press kit. Look at that.
Nicole West:
Stunning.
David Read:
Their photography for Season One was really well done.
Remington Phillips:
I agree.
David Read:
I’ve never seen photography for Season Two. I’m sure it exists.
Remington Phillips:
There was a big effort here, you can tell. It’s to introduce these new characters.
David Read:
High-quality paper.
Nicole West:
The whole thing, the outside of it is stunning.
David Read:
They did a great job.
Remington Phillips:
Wow. And there are the discs.
David Read:
101, 102 and then 103.
Remington Phillips:
The first three episodes on DVD?
David Read:
Yep.
Remington Phillips:
Wow. Beautiful.
David Read:
Yep. That’s it.
Nicole West:
That’s amazing.
David Read:
Standard definition, so if you wanted to see it in HD, you had to watch when the episode aired. I had some friends I wanted to watch it with, they’re like, “But it’s not HD.” “You know what? You can go kick rocks.” It’s still good. I’m very interested in getting that restored, for sure.
Remington Phillips:
That’s cool.
David Read:
I’m gonna close with a couple of pieces from Legends Memorabilia. Stargate SG-1. I need to have this box fixed because in one of my moves, it got broken.
Nicole West:
Oh, no.
David Read:
This is my problem with this; you can never get it out. There’s only a handful of Zats on the market. You guys brought this for me and I’m very interested to try it. How’s it work?
Remington Phillips:
It may be because it’s not level.
David Read:
There we go.
Remington Phillips:
Full licensed.
Nicole West:
I like the amethyst transparent handle down here. It’s beautifully transparent, it’s very cool. I love that.
David Read:
That’s gorgeous. One more. There we go.
Nicole West:
It’s cute. Here, I’ll let you set it up over there.
David Read:
I’m pretty sure this is Legends Memorabilia as well.
Nicole West:
I just like the box.
David Read:
Yes. This is before 3D printing was a thing. Keep that there. This has always been on my desk. If you’ve watched the show for a while, you’ve seen it.
Remington Phillips:
Beautiful.
David Read:
This puts 3D to shame, in my opinion. In terms of everything that I’ve seen up until probably this weekend.
Remington Phillips:
CNC milled.
David Read:
Look at the detail on that.
Nicole West:
Absolutely stunning.
David Read:
They did a good job.
Nicole West:
You can get the logo bricks up top.
Remington Phillips:
This is ultra rare. I’ve seen this one other time, other than today.
David Read:
Really?
Remington Phillips:
This one other time on eBay. I’ve not seen these…
David Read:
That’s just a few pieces that exist in the wild, of rare Stargate merchandise.
Remington Phillips:
But it makes quite an impressive spread.
David Read:
I’m glad I got to share it with you guys.
Nicole West:
Thank you for sharing it.
Remington Phillips:
It’s been a lot of fun. I absolutely adore getting a glimpse into some of the world of rare memorabilia.
Nicole West:
Just when you think you’ve seen it all, you get to find a whole bunch of new things.
David Read:
That’s it. Every time I turn around, I’m getting exposed to something new. I’m like, “They made that? When did they make that?” No one knows everything, so it’s cool to come across some things.
Remington Phillips:
True. There are comic books and action figures and the official magazine collection. Maybe one day we’ll be sitting down again and you’ll be showing us some new stuff.
David Read:
There’s plenty more, for sure. Thanks for tuning in, everyone. We’ll see you on the other side.
