David Read:
Hello everyone, my name is David Read. Welcome to Dial the Gate, the Stargate Oral History Project. I’ve got a special one for you here we have Retro-Badger coming on from his YouTube channel Retro hyphen Badger but before we get into that I want to invite you to click the like button if you enjoy the content that we’re creating on the channel it will continue to help the channel grow please also consider sharing this video with a Stargate friend and, if you want to get notified about future episodes, click the subscribe icon and if you click the bell icon it will notify you the moment a new video drops and you’ll get my notifications of any last minute guest changes. This is key if you plan on watching live because some people reschedule. And clips from this episode will be released over the course of the next few weeks on the Dial the Gate YouTube channel, possibly GateWorld but I have to talk with Darren about that as well. As this is a pre-recorded episode, the moderators in the YouTube feed will not be taking questions from the audience, I do apologize for that but hopefully I’ll be hitting all the questions that you have. Number one question, I’ll be bringing up pretty quickly here, but before I get into that: Retro-Badger…
Retro-Badger:
Hello.
David Read:
Of [the] Retro-Badger YouTube channel, hello sir, how you doing?
Retro-Badger:
Hello, I’m doing good thank you David. Thank you so much for inviting me it’s an honor to be on your show.
David Read:
So, I’ve got to explain straight away because people are like, if anyone who’s taking a look at your channel it’s, is it exclusively a Star Trek game focus[ed] channel with Stargate and other IPs layered in or, what is your channel, what is Retro-Badger?
Retro-Badger:
It’s mainly Star Trek video game focused however it does cross over into other Sci-Fi games as well. I mainly feature Star Trek ship battles and I receive requests from people on a daily basis.
David Read:
Now do you have a Patreon?
Retro-Badger:
Um… no I don’t have a Patreon.
David Read:
OK so you just take requests – Oh OK.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah that’s it, I make a note of all the requests and I go with the most popular ones.
David Read:
OK, through the comments section of each video.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, that’s right. I do receive emails from people occasionally as well
David Read:
OK, like me!
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, that I do… I have featured some other Sci-Fi games, some Star Wars games and I am going to be doing some Stargate video games in the future.
David Read:
OK, very good! If they come out!
Retro-Badger:
Particularly… well that’s it isn’t it yeah. I’m a big fan of the Genesis Stargate game, the original.
David Read:
Oh, Sega yes, absolutely
Retro-Badger:
[inaudible]
David Read:
Yeah, SEGA and SNES yeah absolutely.
Retro-Badger:
That’s right
David Read:
So, the primary piece of content or game piece that you use is Bridge Commanders uh Star Trek Bridge Commander is that correct?
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, that’s right
Retro-Badger:
It came out in 2002 and it’s basically about starship combat
Retro-Badger:
And pretty much from when it was released people figured out how to mod it straight away. And for the last twenty years or so people have been adding new ships to it.
David Read:
Not just that but the textures have been improved as well, haven’t they?
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, that’s right, they found a way to increase the textures so… They look more modern basically, they’ve kept up with graphics and…
Retro-Badger:
It’s very customizable, it’s incredible to look at it, yeah.
Retro-Badger:
To look at it you wouldn’t think it’s such an old game. It’s really kept up you know.
David Read:
That’s the thing you know as how sharp it looks it keeps, you know, it’s not like “oh let me go and watch this old, you know, retro looking thing”, it’s the graphics, the damage, debris it’s pretty cool.
Retro-Badger:
It is.
David Read:
So, here’s the thing, people are, you know, they’re curious about the Stargate content. I first have to say when I discover[ed] your channel I’ve been back home for about three and a half weeks now, I guess, but before that I spent a month in LA working on editing a feature film and, as you can imagine, we went on a lot of breaks away from the content station and I would hide up in my room and, I don’t know how but your channel fell into my YouTube feed rotation and within like two or three weeks I must have watched a hundred and fifty [to] two hundred of your episodes. Because I was just like, you know what I’ve always loveDavid Read: space combat games, I grew up on TIE Fighter…
Retro-Badger:
Oh yeah, TIE Fighter!
David Read:
And just once I completed the mission I just blew up all the Imperial ships and then Klingon Academy…
Retro-Badger:
Oh yeah Klingon Academy.
David Read:
Which I played for years and a lot of the sound effects and music are managed to transfer into, I guess, from the fan Community into Bridge Commander
Retro-Badger:
That’s right yeah.
David Read:
And then Elite Dangerous has been my jam for a while, and then I saw this I’m like “this is great I keep I want to install it,I want to play it and it’s like “Ah I’ll just watch this guy play”. And that’s what it’s been. So you got me through a long list of nights where I worked three weeks straight and
Retro-Badger:
Really? Wow.
David Read:
Any break was you and me, really is what it came down to so this is a treat to have you on because it’s like, now I get to pick your brain watching you play Combat in real time which is what we’re about to do.
Retro-Badger:
[inaudible]
David Read:
So what got you into this?
Retro-Badger:
Uh well I mean I’ve been playing Bridge Commander for the past twenty years.
David Read:
When it came out?
Retro-Badger:
Yeah the day it came out I went to get it, I remember but I just uploaded a few videos during lockdown when, you know, during coronavirus.
David Read:
Yeah, what’s that? Yeah.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah it was just for a, I don’t know, a bit of a joke really, I put up two videos and people were just commenting constantly and I thought like you know this is really nice, it’s great I can chat to people about this really old game and then it just got more and more popular as it went along it just almost went a bit viral I would say.
David Read:
Had the new texture packs really been released yet?
Retro-Badger:
Uh what for sorry?
David Read:
The texture packs, the replacements for the…
Retro-Badger:
Oh yeah.
David Read:
So had those already been in…
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, they’ve been out for quite a while.
David Read:
OK, got it.
Retro-Badger:
Although there’s one called bridge Commander Remastered which is quite a newish project.
Retro-Badger:
And he’s still releasing updates to that and it’s like a complete remake of the whole game.
David Read:
Oh, wow.
Retro-Badger:
Uh so there’s a lot of people behind it, a lot of people behind the scenes making new mods, new ships…
David Read:
So, it’s still in progress?
Retro-Badger:
Oh yeah, definitely it’s uh, if anything it’s getting busier, there’s more and more people getting involved and there’s some really talented modders out there. It’s just incredible.
David Read:
So, you’re a Stargate fan?
Retro-Badger:
I am yeah, I’m a Stargate…
David Read:
What’s your Stargate story?
Retro-Badger:
Right, well funnily enough it goes back to the video game.
Retro-Badger:
So, I remember a friend on my street, he had that video game and I was really interested in it thinking oh wow it’s the ancient Egyptians. I’ve always had like fascination with Egypt and I remember going to the video store and seeing the Stargate movie and I remember we actually hired it out so I’ve gone from the game to the movie and then of course a year or two later [the] TV show and I remember there was a lot of excitement around the launch of the TV show and there’s even my friends, we all watched it and it was just incredible really.
David Read:
So, you go back to when it was first airing in the late nineties?
Retro-Badger:
Oh yeah, yeah definitely, yeah absolutely incredible. I mean I’ve never seen anything like it, of course you have Star Trek but Stargate [is] set now isn’t it, it’s set in… That’s what I love about it, it’s kind of more, this is what would happen if we encounter aliens this would be…
David Read:
Well [what would] we have to do? We’d have to light a fire under our butts and start reverse-engineering some tech, which is like what we did pretty quickly with the X-301 and working all the way up to the BC-304s and Atlantis and Destiny. There’s no Destiny released in the game yet is there?
Retro-Badger:
There is actually.
David Read:
There is one?
Retro-Badger:
A few days ago and I uploaded a video, maybe last year but I lost the mod but I’ve actually found it again.
Retro-Badger:
So I’ll have to send you that one.
David Read:
OK please yeah, I want to show some of this stuff while we talk so…
Retro-Badger:
It’s a work in progress the Destiny so it’s kind of, it’s not in the best condition the ship to begin with is it of course but it can still hang in a fight for a little bit and it does have an impressive weapons array.
David Read:
It would have to have pretty good Shields but wait when it’s out of power, it’s out of power. I was watching it’s one of your videos with the saucers, the Enterprise D saucer going up against something and there was a situation where, you know it was, once you ran out of power that was it and I was really surprised that the saucer depended so much on the secondary Hull for power I didn’t know that that was a thing.
Retro-Badger:
It’s down to the original modder, I think, who created that. I’ve actually released a version of the Galaxy class of my own.
David Read:
Really? OK.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, it’s like a Dominion War upgrade.
Retro-Badger:
With uh Quantum Torpedoes and…
Retro-Badger:
It doesn’t run out of power now so…
David Read:
OK, so what do you have prepared for us today?
Retro-Badger:
Right well, first of all I was going to show you what the Asgard upgraded Odyssey can do against an Ori warship but we’re also going to have a puddle jumper at our side as well, to help.
Retro-Badger:
So um, because we’re going to need the help I think, I mean even though we have the Asgard beam technology, the weapons, the Ori beam is still pretty nasty.
David Read:
Yeah, it’s our equivalent of the of the Death Star primary weapon so…
Retro-Badger:
Exactly, yeah, we could take maybe two or three shots at most and then that’s it.
David Read:
Then that’s it.
Retro-Badger:
So, the puddle jump will play an important part
Retro-Badger:
We’ve just had a new Stargate update as well.
David Read:
Really?
Retro-Badger:
Version four, yeah literally a few days ago which is great timing and the, you know, the drones? The ancient drones, they actually go in the ship and they come out [of] the ship and they go in the ship again.
David Read:
Wooow, yeah because they don’t blow, they don’t detonate immediately.
Retro-Badger:
That’s right yeah and this is the first time we’ve ever had it where they do that now and it works.
David Read:
OK. My frame rate’s really good on this side.
Retro-Badger:
Oh good, good. So we’ve got the Ori warship.
David Read:
Okay, wow, look at that.
Retro-Badger:
I don’t know if you want me to yeah, I can show you the ships…
David Read:
Yeah let’s go through, let’s, you know what let me back up here. So this is the interface for Bridge Commander let’s go through some of the Stargate mods that are available.
Retro-Badger:
OK so we have an ancient shuttle.
David Read:
Yeah.
Retro-Badger:
We’ve got the, that’s just an ancient city so that’s a fully powered ancient city with three ZPMs, modules so it’s very powerful. We have Atlantis, now that can fire drones…
David Read:
Set after one year of the Atlantis Expedition, OK.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah and it’s got railguns as well.
David Read:
That’s great!
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, they’re not very useful. We’ve got an ancient Cruiser. We have the satellites…
David Read:
Satellite. Wow.
Retro-Badger:
We have a fully functioning one as well.
David Read:
So that’s good for one, so one is good for one shot and then incinerates, hopefully with Peter Grodin not aboard so…
Retro-Badger:
Oh yes.
David Read:
Destiny! Woow.
Retro-Badger:
It doesn’t fully work but it will operate.
David Read:
I’d like to see it fly at some point.
Retro-Badger:
Sure.
David Read:
We have to, for the SGU fans out there. Wow look at that puddle jumper.
Retro-Badger:
Now I love the Puddle Jumper, I’d say it’s my favorite ship in this entire mod.
Retro-Badger:
[In] the collection. We’ve got the ancient warship, that can shoot drones like, remember Antarctica when they all came flying out?
David Read:
OK, it looks like that OK.
Retro-Badger:
That can pretty much do that.
Retro-Badger:
Asgard ships, so we have…
David Read:
OK, there’s the classic Asgard ship and the refit, yeah.
Retro-Badger:
Science and…
David Read:
O’Neill class.
Retro-Badger:
O’Neill, yeah with two L’s.
David Read:
Al’kesh, good.
Retro-Badger:
We’ve got a large amount of Goa’uld ships.
David Read:
Can you click on the Al’kesh real quick?
Retro-Badger:
Sure yeah.
David Read:
Ah there we go that’s so cool.
Retro-Badger:
It’s a nice mod, that actually, it’s my favorite Goa’uld one.
David Read:
Of the Goa’uld? OK.
Retro-Badger:
Yep, we have Anubis’ flagship which can fire, it’s a bit temperamental.
Retro-Badger:
The weapon it fires is very powerful.
David Read:
OK and then the super weapon configuration that’s cool.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah so it’s got both, so yeah you can see it there.
David Read:
Yeah absolutely.
Retro-Badger:
And we’ve got Apophis’ flagship.
Retro-Badger:
[We’ve] got cargo ships, Tel’taks, quite a few different versions of those.
Retro-Badger:
We have the Death Glider which has the sound effects as well.
David Read:
Ha’tak.
Retro-Badger:
There’s all different variants you can see…
David Read:
People taking different passes at it. The needle threader! Wow, OK, 3[x]01 – Into the Fire. Personal [cruiser], yeah that’s Osiris’, the pyramid ship from the movie.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, we’ve got Starbase.
David Read:
Oh, that’s cool! Are these, how, are these to scale?
Retro-Badger:
Now some of them, no, not all of them. Some of them are, some of them aren’t. Atlantis…
David Read:
Atlantis is horribly small.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, it looks OK but yeah, the scale’s not quite right.
David Read:
If it was to scale with the game crash more often than it does?
Retro-Badger:
Very possibly.
David Read:
Is that a thing?
Retro-Badger:
We do have the Death Star mod which is absolutely huge and that does make the game unstable. It does work, sometimes but yeah, I think it’s to do with stability.
Retro-Badger:
We have a transport ship. See now getting onto the Tau’ri.
David Read:
Yeah, OK [BC-]304s. Apollo, Daedalus…
Retro-Badger:
Korolev.
David Read:
Odyssey.
Retro-Badger:
The Odyssey refit is the Asgard upgraded version.
David Read:
Oh OK, with the Asgard beam weapons, OK.
Retro-Badger:
That’s right.
David Read:
No Sun Tzu love I guess, all right.
Retro-Badger:
No, I’ve got the F-302.
David Read:
OK, so no X-301, all right. Midway space station! Cool.
Retro-Badger:
We’ve got X-301 there.
David Read:
Oh, we do have the X-301 I’m sorry.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, just there. No it’s, got the refit.
David Read:
Prometheus, the office building in space, all right.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah.
David Read:
Wow! There it is, that’s great. Ori Warship.
Retro-Badger:
Then we get on to the terrifying…
David Read:
Ah the space toilet seat!
Retro-Badger:
[that’s] it yeah indeed.
David Read:
Very good.
Retro-Badger:
We have the fighters.
David Read:
Ori fighter, yeah.
Retro-Badger:
We have the satellite weapon, it’s a little bit temperamental that one.
David Read:
I imagine the high-powered stuff would be.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, it tends to fire when it wants to that one so sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Now we have the Supergate…
David Read:
The Supergate! Is it just set dressing or does it do anything?
Retro-Badger:
You don’t see it open, but Ori warships can come through it.
David Read:
Really?
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, they just appear, I didn’t know it did that until I started playing a big battle and these Ori warships kept appearing [and] I’m like “where are they coming from” and it was through the Supergate.
David Read:
Wow, that’s cool!
Retro-Badger:
And it’s almost impossible to destroy I’ve tried everything, it’s just indestructible. So we have the Hebridian Drone, not sure what that is actually. We have Martin Lloyd’s ship from yeah from the 100th episode. We have nukes. We have a Tobin Mine.
David Read:
That’s misspelled but that’s OK. The [7×13] Grace ship.
Retro-Badger:
Oh, of course.
David Read:
Replicators. Asgard Mothership… Oh taken over OK I get it.
Retro-Badger:
Goa’uld Ha’tak.
David Read:
Yeah, so these are our galaxies Replicators and the Asurans.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, mixed together.
David Read:
OK, Spider Vessel, yeah. It’s just a great big replicator, it’s the same it’s the same asset they just enlarged it. Stolen Cruiser from the edge of the universe and then we saw in, um, [6×12] Unnatural Selection. My mind’s going. We saw it briefly, it scanned Prometheus.
Retro-Badger:
I couldn’t remember where I’d seen it.
David Read:
Yup and it was in enemies at 5[x]01 and then the mid-season return for season six. Milky Way Stargate, that’s cool. Does the puddle, does it move or is it static?
Retro-Badger:
No it’s just static. It’s just for effect I think but I like the Pegasus Gate, I really like the look of those.
David Read:
I’d like to fly by them.
Retro-Badger:
Sure, yeah. So uh we’ve got the Wraith Darts and they make the noise as well and we’ve got the Wraith Hive ships
David Read:
Wow, does it do a Doppler effect in game?
Retro-Badger:
Uh, no.
David Read:
OK so it’s the same sound, steady sound.
Retro-Badger:
Um, you know still pretty cool. The Hive ship is obviously very well armed but it doesn’t have shields so it’s, any other normal ship will struggle against it [but] the Ancients obviously [have] the drones.
David Read:
So they should be able to take care of [that]. Yeah the Ancients were only taken out by their sheer numbers so, yeah they just couldn’t keep up. That’s a lot of Stargate ships.
Retro-Badger:
It’s amazing isn’t it, really complete.
David Read:
Yeah I’m really impressed. So what are you gonna throw at us first?
Retro-Badger:
Right okay so we’re gonna go up against a[n] Ori warship but we’re gonna have a puddle jumper because we need that for distraction, well I hope it’ll distract them anyway, it might not. Let’s see, oh yes we’ve got the closed version as well but obviously we don’t want that so we want the one with the weapons showing.
David Read:
So this is us. It defaults to a sovereign, interesting.
Retro-Badger:
OK so we’re gonna be in the Asgard upgraded refit.
David Read:
And then you pick your, you pick your Bridge. OK that’s cool.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah I’m gonna go with the cardassian one so it’s not [too] Star Trek because I’ll get confused myself.
David Read:
wow, look at this!
Retro-Badger:
Here we go. So we’re firing the Asgard beam weapons now. They’re very distance dependent, so from a distance they don’t inflict too much damage and as you see here we’re taking fire. Where’s my puddle jumper?
David Read:
Wow look at that look at the textures.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah it’s pretty impressive for a 20 year old game. They’ve really… oh no!
David Read:
Are they gone?
Retro-Badger:
Radar has been taken out. Oh dear. Right, try to repair it.
David Read:
Can you, what about your aim?
Retro-Badger:
Yeah that’s it, I can’t really, I need the computer to lock on but if they’ve taken my radar out… I think I’ve repaired it. Whoa! OK it looks like the Puddle Jumper…
David Read:
Did it take out the Ori ship?
Retro-Badger:
It did.
David Read:
Do you want to run it again? That’s Martha Hackett’s character, right?
Retro-Badger:
Right OK, so we also have a cloak as well we can go invisible.
David Read:
But you don’t like to cloak?
Retro-Badger:
No because every time I do it, it always ends in disaster. I’m cursed with that cloak.
David Read:
These beam weapons! Look at this.
Retro-Badger:
Yep, now they haven’t fired their beam weapon. Oh gosh there it goes! They missed. So we don’t really want to be in front of the Ori warship for obvious reasons. I need to get closer, as you can see I’m doing a bit of damage in the top left hand corner, you can see the shields there.
David Read:
Yeah, the shields really show-accurate, I’m pretty impressed.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah. Oh gosh no!
David Read:
It did a Prometheus.
Retro-Badger:
I did yes. I’m getting flashbacks.
David Read:
Right into the neck. That is so cool.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, it’s pretty accurate.
David Read:
Can we get a pass of just the ship in Flight? can we get a look at it?
Retro-Badger:
Sure, yeah.
David Read:
Wow, look at that!
Retro-Badger:
So, you can see the fighter bays and we’ve got the sound as well but yeah the Ori, they got a really lucky shot, they took the radar out they’ve never done that before to me.
David Read:
It just goes to show, you know, there’s plenty of variability in this gameplay.
Retro-Badger:
There is, it’s very random not every battle’s the same so every time you do it you get a different result I would say.
David Read:
Space Turtle all right that’s sweet. Well don’t take the Odyssey up against the Ori without your puddle jumper ready to go.
Retro-Badger:
Exactly yeah. So next I was going to actually be the Ori and go up against a Giant Goa’uld fleet with Apophis’ Mothership and I think we can take ‘em.
David Read:
Let’s uh recreate the scene from Exodus but add a uh add a little bit of our our future in with it there.
Retro-Badger:
OK so we’ve got, I was just gonna add some… I don’t want to do too many though if we do, like, a very large Fleet, there’s a chance of the game will crash.
David Read:
Explain AI level for me?
Retro-Badger:
Oh yeah so that’s the computer difficulty.
David Read:
Oh, it’s just kind of hard to go at you OK.
Retro-Badger:
Exactly yeah but I always set it to high.
David Read:
OK yeah you want a challenge.
Retro-Badger:
Exactly and sometimes the AI falls asleep I’ve found. If you put it on [low] it just sits there and doesn’t do anything. So let’s see… All right, oops, Ori warship. So we’ve got three Ha’taks and, oh no, we’ve got four haven’t we?
David Read:
Yeah.
Retro-Badger:
Oh right, I hope not overstretched myself here. That’s the Ori though you know?
David Read:
Oh yeah, they’re so arrogant.
Retro-Badger:
Exactly, so this is the type of battle they do isn’t it really. So the closer we get, the more damage we’ll inflict but as you can see we’ve taken the shields down to, look at that, already.
David Read:
So it is proximity dependent. Is that built into the game?
Retro-Badger:
It’s mod specific. You can actually control that. So there we go we’re taking out a Ha’tak. Yeah look at that. Oh Apophis, hello Apophis.
David Read:
Here he comes…
Retro-Badger:
Yep, he’s got a fear of spiders as well doesn’t he?
David Read:
Yeah, he does
Retro-Badger:
Gonna have a fear of the Ori next.
David Read:
He never would have survived.
Retro-Badger:
Look at that, straight through
David Read:
Did you get him?
Retro-Badger:
Yeah he’s uh..
David Read:
He’s past tense?
Retro-Badger:
He’s gone
David Read:
Wow, poor snakehead.
Retro-Badger:
We can also fire those blue pulse weapons as well. The Ori have them, and that’s quite effective. Oh look at that it completely decimates them.
David Read:
So, are these new explosion patterns or were these original to the game?
Retro-Badger:
Uh it’s a mixture. So they’ve upgraded it over the years but the explosion is a mixture basically people just, kind of, changed the color a bit or they’ve made it do different things.
David Read:
You know there used to be three beam weapons on this thing. The original concept art had two on the, like, 45 degrees near the front.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, I wish we could combine them together though. They did that in the TV show didn’t they? In that battle.
David Read:
That’s not a bad mod. The ball needs to be brighter but other than that it’s, yeah, it’s, that’s pretty cool.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, the detailing’s not too bad. The front here, like the windows at the side.
David Read:
Uh-huh, absolutely, Vala’s in there somewhere.
Retro-Badger:
Oh yeah at the front.
David Read:
Oh, you got a, someone got shot off on us, look at that, we got a bit of a blemish on our front end there
Retro-Badger:
Oh yeah, right there, it was two actually.
David Read:
Oh, right near the weapon, cool. What else you got?
Retro-Badger:
Uh so we could try the Atlantis. So I had an idea where we could be defending Atlantis against a Wraith Hive attack and there’s gonna be a few Puddle Jumpers. We’ll be in a Puddle Jumper. So, let’s set that up.
David Read:
Yeah, they should have, at the end, once they got to Earth they should have deployed the Puddle Jumpers
Retro-Badger:
Oh yeah, definitely. So where are all the, oh yeah, [of] course they’re up there aren’t they. I love the Puddle Jumper. It’s always been my favorite Stargate Atlantis ship for some reason. I love it, how it can just go invisible and it’s so small and like you could park it, like, in your in your garage.
David Read:
Absolutely. The first time I saw it was when they were doing the preview episode for Atlantis I thought it looked like a green loaf of bread, that was my first thought in my brain: “oh it’s a loaf of bread”. Oh man, are you sure? All right
Retro-Badger:
So, we’re gonna be in a Puddle Jumper. Right here we go. Now the game does slow down when there’s a lot of particle effects so that may happen. Oh here we go, we’re OK. So Atlantis is there. Not quite to scale but…
David Read:
Yeah, not bad, at least you got it
Retro-Badger:
OK so we have drones. We’re firing the drones right now.
David Read:
You’re pretty nimble, look at you.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, they’re very maneuverable, the ships.
David Read:
Wow one Hive ship gone already.
Retro-Badger:
Now sometimes, amusingly, they actually collide into each other, the Hive ships. In fact, that might have just happened there.
David Read:
It sure looks like it. They don’t have enough room.
Retro-Badger:
So, we, oh gosh look at that we’ve got some nukes where have they come from? Oh Atlantis must have fired them.
David Read:
Atlantis has nukes?
Retro-Badger:
Oh, hang on a second, what’s happening here? Oh I think I’ve been destroyed.
David Read:
Were you hit?
Retro-Badger:
I’ve been destroyed. No I think what happened was the explosion of the Wraith Hive ship. I think the game’s struggling with the textures. Yep there you go.
David Read:
Should we decrease the number of Hive ships or are you just, re-ran it?
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, we can do that and what I’m gonna do is, oh there we go, it’s crashed. I’ll go back in and yeah, I’ll decrease the number of Hive ships. Yeah so you can have some really good battles with this game. Yeah it is interesting though when I put Star Trek ships against Stargate ships a lot of the Star Trek ships struggle if I’m honest
David Read:
Just overpowered?
Retro-Badger:
Um well I think the Ancients, there’s a lot of debate that goes on, on my Channel with this but I think the ancient drones would go through Starfleet Shields personally.
David Read:
Yeah, like they’re like chronoton torpedoes
Retro-Badger:
Exactly yeah they can just go through anything. All right so we’ve got the ancient city.
David Read:
There’s some jumpers
Retro-Badger:
I don’t think we need that many jumpers
David Read:
No I think the Wraith are [having a] very hard time putting up with us.
Retro-Badger:
Should [we] do maybe three Wraith Hive ships? I’ll be in the little jumper.
David Read:
Let’s try this one more time. I love [that] you can see the reflection, there’s no one in the Captains seat
Retro-Badger:
That’s true, that. Right here we go.
David Read:
So the ovals in the middle there, the top of, is that your upper shield and your lower shield in the shield section?
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, that’s correct. Let’s fire some drones. I’m assuming it’s going to take quite a lot of drones. Although they are effective, these are actually the new ones. Oh wow, okay. So yeah look at that, the Wraith Hive fleet has been taken out, quite easily, actually.
David Read:
The whole fleet?
Retro-Badger:
I’m not sure if that’s a… it looks like it, all three of them I think that was a bit too easy. Unless somebody beamed something over that we don’t know about, maybe, it could be.
David Read:
Do we have Hermiod on our side?
Retro-Badger:
He could be on there, with a nice turkey sandwich hopefully.
David Read:
I like how they took the lower half of the Atlantis design from Rainmaker, from the earlier Seasons because the later Seasons, it didn’t have that. They really changed really in the city.
Retro-Badger:
I didn’t notice that.
David Read:
It was a huge redesign on Atlantis from the beginning to the end there. [Be]cause different effects houses started making their own modifications to the model or making their own models completely and, to the naked eye, if you go back and you look from [1×01] Rising to [5×20] Enemy at the Gate you will notice some major changes to the city. It doesn’t have any lights!
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, I think they’re in the dark, aren’t they? I don’t know what they’re doing. Maybe they’ve run out of power, I guess. We’ve got, what else can I show you?
David Read:
Can you fire at Atlantis?
Retro-Badger:
I can actually.
David Read:
What would happen?
Retro-Badger:
Let’s try it.
David Read:
Will your crew start yelling at you?
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, the Safi, the first officer, she normally does. Right now this is interesting. So yeah, she’s shouting at me right now but it looks…
David Read:
That’s funny.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, it looks like the drones are still doing damage or they’re trying to do damage but the city’s undamaged so the Ancients must have some sort of Defense built in to protect themselves against drones.
David Read:
Oh, absolutely yeah, the Puddle Jumper can pass through but I bet the drones can’t. Just in case they’re commandeered or something. But in that case you wouldn’t want your Puddle Jumper to pass through either I think [it] would Kamikaze you. Anyway you can’t think of everything.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, let’s see, we’ve got destiny. Try Destiny. Who could we go up against?
David Read:
Let’s put her up put her up against Prometheus. Let’s see what happens.
Retro-Badger:
We’ll go with the refit. It’s not fitted with Asgard beam weapons.
David Read:
OK good yeah I don’t want ‘em to go through us like butter.
Retro-Badger:
Destiny, there we go. So it does have a weapon selection but when you do it, nothing happens and it just runs out of power.
David Read:
Oh, it’s very low res[olution]. That’s such a shame.
Retro-Badger:
It’s a work in progress. Look at that. That is Prometheus. Oh the forward Shields collapsed. So it fires these big bursts and then it has to recharge. But if you look at the power there it’s only running at twenty percent so they’ve tried making it accurate to the show I think.
David Read:
Yeah, we need a star. Anyone got a star handy?
Retro-Badger:
That’d be really good wouldn’t it. Look at Prometheus. They’re really struggling aren’t they? They’re in trouble.
David Read:
Jeez all right. We don’t need an Ori satellite.
Retro-Badger:
So yeah, maneuverability in the destiny though, it’s not really designed for turning
David Read:
No she takes her time.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah exactly. So as you can see we’re doing a couple thousand kph.
David Read:
Can we see Prometheus, can you zoom in?
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, sure here we go. So, Prometheus has got major, major Hull damage. Definitely some damage at the front there.
David Read:
I’m having some Ethan flashbacks.
Retro-Badger:
I’m trying to maneuver round. Now these weapons here, they’re at the top but I don’t think they work because no matter what I try… Oh that was different, it’s like a different color that. But yeah I would mess with these power settings but usually what happens is I just run out of power.
David Read:
Just run out of juice, yeah. It’d be really nice to just take them out of their misery.
Retro-Badger:
So they’ve surrendered. There we go well yeah. There goes the front .
David Read:
Ah that’s just crazy.
Retro-Badger:
It’s um it’s not very detailed of course. Well it’s nice to have.
David Read:
Whoever designed that needs to finish their work. Smaller fighter combat, I’d like to put a few of our F302s against a [Puddle] Jumper. Let’s see how long we’d last.
Retro-Badger:
Sounds good. Right so.
David Read:
Three maybe, three including us.
Retro-Badger:
Not just one?
David Read:
No I don’t think we make it.
Retro-Badger:
That’s the point, we only have a few missiles don’t we.
David Read:
Yeah that’s the thing
Retro-Badger:
All right, here we go, we’ve got the AIM-120-Abrams .
David Read:
What is that?
Retro-Badger:
I believe it’s a cannon so it’s like, well like a machine gun
David Read:
OK, so that’s us?
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, the type that you get on a fighter jet probably but… Let’s fire some missiles, there we go.
David Read:
Is he gone?
Retro-Badger:
Yep. Oh hang on a second, that says “Closed Jumper”
David Read:
Yes, I noticed that.
Retro-Badger:
Hang on let me try doing that again, did I select the wrong type?
David Read:
Was he able to fire anything?
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, that’s weird huh. I could try it again. I know the battle will be over in about twenty seconds anyway
David Read:
Can they open and close?
Retro-Badger:
Yes, you can do
David Read:
OK so there it is, I got it.
Retro-Badger:
That was weird. Oh, they’re firing the drones. Let’s hope they’re not aimed at us. Oh there goes an F302
David Read:
Just with one drone, wow.
Retro-Badger:
So, my missiles are out and, nope, there we go, we got hit, we’ve been taken out. Look at those drones flying, see them zipping around.
David Read:
I can see ‘em. It’s a drone without a target, a few of them, that’s funny. So, it’s better for larger ship combat. The smaller ones, I mean, if you’re wanting to have some Starship porn time you’re not gonna last very long with the smaller ones.
Retro-Badger:
That’s it yeah, they’re quite weak in comparison. We have, let’s see, we’ve also got Anubis’ superweapon. I like that, where is it?
David Read:
It’s Goa’uld stuff, yeah. His Flagship.
Retro-Badger:
So, we could be Anubis actually. Maybe we should be Anubis. And who could it go up against?
David Read:
The entire human Fleet. Would we last?
Retro-Badger:
Ooh, right. We should, although actually, if they have the Asgard upgraded beam tech, that might be a challenge but yeah, that could be a good challenge actually. So let’s put the Apollo, Daedalus, Korolev, Prometheus again?
David Read:
Yeah, absolutely.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, let’s try that. I think uh if we if we bring fighters into it, it might get a bit unstable.
David Read:
Think like a Goa’uld, think like a Goa’uld, think like a Goa’uld. “Nothing can stop the evil that I bring upon you, oops sorry never mind”. Wow look at that, isn’t that interesting, the flower of death. There we go. I love how the shields are the right colors, you know, I love that they give you those options
Retro-Badger:
So we can fire the beam.
David Read:
That looked like a [Star Trek Voyager] bio-ship weapon.
Retro-Badger:
Yes, there we go. Bow to your new masters. Oh wait our Shields, our Shields [are] collapsing. I think it’s the Asgard beam.
David Read:
Yeah we gave ‘em a little too much Firepower there.
Retro-Badger:
That’s cheating.
David Read:
You gave it to ‘em!
Retro-Badger:
Look at that! Oh, that’s a shame, I almost feel sorry for Anubis.
David Read:
Some of the pieces just spiral.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, the physics engine working there I suppose. I don’t think Anubis has had his coffee this morning.
David Read:
Absolutely not. So and you know I’m glad that the Asgard hadn’t thought up Asgard beam weapons yet apparently otherwise Anubis would have had all of his ships firing Asgard beam weapons when he took the knowledge from Jonas’s mind so you know there’s that Advantage
Retro-Badger:
That’s a good point. We have the replicator ship. OK, who should we go up against? Who do we not like?
David Read:
Um, jeez, yeah we haven’t done any of the warships yet so let’s try that. Replicators against Ancient warships.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, okay so we should be in, you know what, I don’t think I’ve tried the Spider vessel
David Read:
OK, let’s see what happens.
Retro-Badger:
Terrifying, the replicators. Actually, there’s quite a few terrifying baddies in Stargate. Wraith of course.
David Read:
There are a few.
Retro-Badger:
It’s like, yes, you’ve got the Borg in Star Trek but, I’m sorry, but if a wraith was sat next to me…
David Read:
Yeah, they have their moments, for sure.
Retro-Badger:
OK so they’ve not fired their drones yet, luckily for us.
David Read:
So, you taught your allies to intercept is that what you’re doing?
Retro-Badger:
Oh, here we go. They have, like, not a railgun, they have like a sort of, the ancient warships have a… Oh, here we go the firing the drones. Here they come. Right we’re taking Hull damage but not as much as the Ori did so this replicator ship is stronger than an Ori warship. Whoa what’s happened? OK they’ve gone, they’re changing sides!
David Read:
What do you mean?
Retro-Badger:
They’ve gone friendly but they’re still firing.
David Read:
Will they do that?
Retro-Badger:
[They] can do, it’s very rare. It happens but…
David Read:
It’s just like a die roll?
Retro-Badger:
Yeah.
David Read:
Bye, bye. That is an ugly texture.
Retro-Badger:
It’s not very nice, is it.
David Read:
I’d like to see Fifth’s ship. Can we switch them out?
Retro-Badger:
Yeah sure.
David Read:
Let’s have a look at the…
Retro-Badger:
The Aurora.
David Read:
Sure, I want to fly Fifth’s ship for a second.
Retro-Badger:
OK, just double checking that’s the ancient ship isn’t it?
David Read:
Fifth’s ship is the uh…
Retro-Badger:
Oh sorry no the Replicator…
David Read:
The Replicator ship from season eight, right, from the first two episodes. Yes that’s it.
Retro-Badger:
That one yeah, I can’t believe I forgot that.
David Read:
It’s all good. The ancient Cruisers are ugly in my opinion. Oh, OK, interesting, middle section doesn’t turn but, you know.
Retro-Badger:
I imagine that would be quite hard to, sure, yeah. Oh, wait, that’s the back again. Ah here’s the front, that’s quite impressive.
David Read:
Yeah, they kind of got the textures right I mean there’s only so much you can do, it’s an ancient game.
Retro-Badger:
Exactly, yeah.
David Read:
It’s 20 years old. didn’t it come out in 2003?
Retro-Badger:
2002
David Read:
2002, oh my gosh OK. Well, you know what, that’s better than I would have expected.
Retro-Badger:
Right, so we’re doing some damage here. Yeah I think we’ve, let’s see their Shields are weakened, they’ve got a bit of Hull damage and they’ve not fired the drones yet interestingly. Oh, here we go, I think they’re gonna make an attack run.
David Read:
It looks ugly, it looks mean. Oh, here we go.
Retro-Badger:
OK, we’re taking hull damage, see in the bottom, major hull damage. Oh, 50/50. Wow, look at that look at that, look at that shield bubble. Oh, hang on. Almost looks a bit like a Stargate didn’t it?
David Read:
It did for a minute there. Let’s have a look at some Stargate assets. Do some flybys… Look at all the pieces of the stalactites.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah now the drones flying around stuff.
David Read:
One of the disappointing things about bridge Commander, the Sovereign had skin tight shields in Nemesis and this one doesn’t. I don’t know if that’s, like, a graphics and intensive thing, you know, the skin tight Shields but they got rid of the bubble
Retro-Badger:
Yeah that’s right. It could be a technical limitation of the game, possibly. It does struggle with complex things like that if you know what I mean. Let’s see, so, we’re going to do… What were we going to do?
David Read:
Let’s do a Puddle Jumper, do some flybys of some Stargates. Throw the Stargates in there. Let’s have a look at some. Just to have a look at the textures and what they did. Don’t give it the Stargate satellite though, we’ll be gone into two seconds.
Retro-Badger:
We’ll have some active Gates. Wait, not an enemy. Actually, it doesn’t matter, it can’t fire.
David Read:
It doesn’t fire? or can it?
Retro-Badger:
Yeah well, that’s the question.
David Read:
They need to get Destiny Gates.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, well hopefully, I mean the modding Community is really increased in, like, the last year or two
David Read:
Can they continue to upgrade the textures? Is that something that’s possible?
Retro-Badger:
I’m not a hundred percent sure but I do remember reading a few years back that there is no actual limit to the texture resolution that you can put in the game so the game can now run… There we go.
David Read:
So you can exceed the uh the limitations of the game that came out?
Retro-Badger:
Absolutely, yeah with a mod you can make it run in full HD so 1920×1080 and I believe there’s a 4K mod
David Read:
Can you go around the back side?
Retro-Badger:
Of course you are limited… Yeah.
David Read:
See if they just duplicated the pattern or if they actually got the backside correct. It looks like they got the back side correct. OK, that is really cool, I mean it’s a static Puddle [Jumper] but you know what, it’s coo
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, and we’ve got [the] Pegasus one over here as well.
David Read:
Have you tried blowing them to hell? And look it’s got the it’s got the thrusters
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, how cool is that.
David Read:
Oh that’s really
Retro-Badger:
It’s trying actually. Oh yeah, I damaged it. It’s doing it again, the Drone is.
David Read:
Wow, you blew up a Stargate. We’ve got some gate busters on our side here.
Retro-Badger:
Yep. Oh, it looks like that one’s gone as well. Woah, OK, so, I’m wondering here, did the explosion take that one out or was it the Drone perhaps. Maybe it locks onto that.
David Read:
It’s possible. What’s the expression? Sympathetic pain or whatever it is when you feel the pain of someone else. It’s like: “Oh, it killed me too”. That’s funny man. These are really cool, thank you for sharing these.
Retro-Badger:
Oh, you’re welcome. Yeah, they’re a lot of fun and they’re easy to install as well it’s all in one package, the Stargate ones. So you’ve got uh the base game, then you add something called Kobayashi Maru yeah and then you add [the] Stargate pack, so it’s just a case of dragging and dropping. But I am, I have, actually, written a guide which I’m gonna publish on my website.
David Read:
Yeah, as long as we can put it in the description below when we publish.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, that’ll be ready, definitely and it’ll be a full guide but if people have any issues they can contact me as well and I’ll help them through it.
David Read:
This is really cool man.
Retro-Badger:
Oh yeah, so we can actually retract the pods.
David Read:
So that’s what he was doing.
Retro-Badger:
I don’t know why the computer decided to retract the pods when it faced us. We can also go invisible, cloak.
David Read:
Does it have that clothing sound?
Retro-Badger:
Yep that’s right, though it’s the Star Trek sound.
David Read:
Oh OK.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah it sounds like a bird of prey or a Romulan Warbird.
David Read:
OK so, what is your plan for your channel, just keep on doing ship battles, are you doing anything, have any plans for the future, to do something, do some newer stuff? I know you’re working through the Star Trek video game that just came out, what’s it called, Insurgents?
Retro-Badger:
Resurgence.
David Read:
Resurgence! That’s it
Retro-Badger:
Yeah Resurgence I know, I mixed that one up all the time, even when I’m talking about it when I’m doing the walkthrough I’m like: “Wait what’s it called again? Resurgence yeah, that’s right”
David Read:
Yeah, is it referring to the the Tkon Empire?
Retro-Badger:
Yes that’s right. The story is based around the Tkon Empire and they’re back basically.
David Read:
They’ve never, I mean this supposed race that dominated most of the Galaxy at one point, we’ve never heard from them again. I’m interested in seeing, you know, that, did they get the actor back who played Portal 63 or is it a new actor?
Retro-Badger:
It sounds like the original actor but I’m not a hundred percent sure. I don’t know, to be honest but he’s very good and he’s, they mean business.
David Read:
Is it a modular game, can they add on to the experience or would they just go off and create a new story at the end, does this have a definitive end do you think?
Retro-Badger:
I think it will have a definitive ending. We all, there’s also a comic book series that you can get. There’s five comics that they [have] published and it’s actually the story leading up to the events in the game and it’s really good, the artwork’s really impressive.
David Read:
OK, cool. What are you, are you gonna do more Stargate stuff on your channel, what’s the plan there?
Retro-Badger:
Yeah so, I am going to start doing the few Stargate games that we have. I want to do walkthroughs for them. I’m going to start off with the Genesis SNES.
David Read:
OK yeah, take us back to Abidos.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, go from there really, just try and go through the ones that I can get hold of. But I’m also doing some documentaries as well, I want to make some documentaries about the Star Trek video games, the ones from around the 2000s made by Activision, I’m trying to get hold of them.
David Read:
There were a crap ton of them. Trying to get hold of the people who did ‘em?
Retro-Badger:
I’m trying to, yeah, and I want to try and set up some interviews [and] make a documentary. Yeah, I’m just also, I’m planning on doing, possibly like, a podcast type show in the future where I’m gonna review episodes, talk about the latest games.
David Read:
If you want anyone to come on then I’m raising my hand now. I played all of that stuff back in the day, the Activision games. I loved Voyager: Elite Force, I loved Elite Force 2, I loved the original Armada, it’s like it’s Command and Conquer for Star Trek, the original Armada was great. I never played the second one but, yeah they did some really good games back in the day and I think A Final Unity is, I think, one of the greatest Star Trek games ever. A Final Unity is just beautiful.
Retro-Badger:
Oh yeah, incredible. I’ve done, I’ve started a walk through with that actually. I’ve got maybe five or six hours in.
David Read:
OK, did you save the space station or did you end up destroying it? The Merchant’s orbital station I think that’s what it was called.
Retro-Badger:
Oh, is that near the beginning?
David Read:
Uh-huh, yeah, you can either save it and get praised by the Admiral or not and get rebuked by the Admiral.
Retro-Badger:
I saved it but I still didn’t do everything right though.
David Read:
Yeah, those are those are great games.
Retro-Badger:
There’s so much depth to it but yeah, there was such high quality games weren’t they. They were big budget games, it’s like…
David Read:
The whole cast, in their Prime.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, exactly. It’s like the Stargate game, Alliances?
David Read:
Yes, [Stargate] SG-1 [The] Alliance,
Retro-Badger:
Now that was, I looked forward to that so much
David Read:
Yeah, that, I want to have the gentleman on who did that and his team. There were so many, I was a part of the Stargate Worlds team. I was not in creation but in marketing so Stargate Worlds and I go way back and so I’m hoping to have some of the folks on who were responsible for it so, Dial the Gate’s gonna get a lot of that covered on the Stargate side so you need to do the same on the Star Trek side because there’s so many great games out there. I would love to hear from the people who did A Final Unity and Spectrum Holobyte and the folks who were at Activision who did some of those titles because they loved the franchise, you could tell.
Retro-Badger:
Oh you can tell. They’re very, the attention to detail, everything was just, it was made by fans wasn’t it, you could tell they were fans of the show it was just perfect.
David Read:
Yeah absolutely, for sure. Well [Retro-]Badger, this has been cool. Are you looking forward to more Stargate, whatever Amazon’s cooking up with MGM?
Retro-Badger:
I am yeah, I can’t wait. I really liked, it’s called Catherine wasn’t it?
David Read:
Yes, Stargate Origins.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, I really, really loved that. It was so cool, they just put, like, little Easter eggs, well it’s full of Easter eggs wasn’t it. At the back, I think we saw Mitchell, possibly
David Read:
There was a character that was dressed like him. They tried to get [Ben] Browder for that ending but they couldn’t. There’s a whole story to that too.
Retro-Badger:
I loved that though, that was just, you know, cool.
David Read:
I don’t like the individual Parts as much as I like the feature length cut. The feature cut is much better for Origins than the individual episodes.
Retro-Badger:
I’ve got that one actually, that’s the one I’ve seen. Yeah it’s fascinating.
David Read:
Well, I appreciate you coming on man.
Retro-Badger:
Oh you’re welcome yeah, thanks for having me on, absolute honor to be on your show. I watch your show.
David Read:
Well I appreciate that, absolutely and you know, as more games come out, as more Stargate content comes out or even mods for for Bridge Commander, I’d love to have you back.
Retro-Badger:
Yeah, anytime, I’d love to.
David Read:
Retro-Badger:from his YouTube channel Retro-Badger Gaming. Thank you so much for tuning in to Dial the Gate my name is David Read. If you enjoy our content, click on that like button. We’re getting ready to wrap up season three and go into a bit of a rest period here for a little bit. I’ve got some other content coming up but the Stargate stuff is going to keep on coming in one way or another and MGM’s got something cooking so we’ll see what happens. Thanks so much for tuning in to Dial the Gate, we’ll see you on the other side.
